The Lynx Effect gets Augmented

Last week at London Victoria train station. Lynx, the body deodriant company, set up an augmented reality feed to one of the big screens in the station. Augemted reality is basically a super imposing image/data/video as an overlay to live video. There are apps on mobile devices with cameras that do a similar thing for local tweets, houses for sale, local restaurants and even one that shows where the underground tubes are when you’re topside.

Veronica Belmont goes geocaching. Beware the muggles

We here at GrigOrig occasionally do some geocahing ourselves, and are sometimes beaten insane with the simple ones we just can’t find (hey Big B) hehe. Clearly what we need is to enlist the help of seasoned geocacher Lee Van Der Bokke just like Veronica Belmont did on here cruze-arati video blog thing. Though as she’s such a hottie, maybe we should ask her instead :). hehe if only. The following video has that really cool street in san francisco on the hill thats like a constant slalom (man that’s a weird looking word) and just look how easy they make it, grrrr.

Veronica Belmont for those who do not know, is known for her geekery in the gaming and tech circles, co hosting on revisions3’s Tekzilla, playstation networks Qore, and as the Chevrolet campaign crute-arati’s tech person, not entirely sure on what that last one is exactly, seems shes got a Chevy Cruze to drive around in a make occasional tech videos that are posted on the Chevrolet YouTube channel, other video hosts from fashion, sports, music and entertainment are doing a similar thing.

Veronica blogs on http://www.veronicabelmont.com/ and is where i first saw “The Trashmaster” blogged, which was the 88 minute movie using game footage of GTA IV on PC, which incidentally was one of my first blogs and the inspiration to share interesting game/tech related new through the Grigorig hub.

She call me Mr BomBastic say me fantastic

Ok, so this post has nothing to do with shaggy and his 90’s hit, and yes its spelt wrong anyway. The point here is that certain web files for this site were saved using regular notepad on a windows machine, this wasn’t a problem until the latest update to the wordpress app for iphone, the problem in question is the BOM BOM BOM BOM. When the app tried to log into a self hosted wordpress blog an error would pop up saying “blog returned invalid data”. This was due to windows notepad adding the BOM byte code at the beginning of php and javascript files. There is also a warning on this when trying to validate using http://validator.w3.org or at least there is when validating html 5.

***Update****
Thanks to Brandon in the comments for pointing out there are also some plugins that have the same problem, the fix below should still work, but to cut some time and stress, he suggests to deactivate all plugins and add them back one at a time to locate which one(s) maybe causing the problem. Thanks Brandon.

The solution….

The simple work around i found was to use an ftp client like the free filezilla from http://filezilla-project.org/ to download any files that may have been saved in notepad when messing around with either the theme or the config file. Then use notepad++ another free app from http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ to open the files and convert to utf-8 without BOM. This takes a little time though, but you should be able to drag a group of files or a folder onto notepad++ to open them all and then just go a tab at a time and go to encoding ->convert to utf-8 without BOM, then save it and move on. when finished, right click a tab and select “close all but me” to get rid of the 20 odd tabs you might have if you dragged the entire theme folder into notepad++. next step is to re upload the files to you server with filezilla. And that should be done and now working again, plus with the added bonus of 1 less warning on the validator page. 🙂

There is also a setting in the settings->preferences ->New Document/Default DIrectory tab that sets the default encoding type, and can be applied to opened ANSI files. Though it does not recognise this as a change enough to save straight away, so either typing something in and deleting it would be necessary to save as the new encoding type. As of yet i have not found a way to batch encode, even with macros. Sorry

As a last note. I should point out that notepad++ is an amazing text editor, especially for developers on a shoe string budget, or who find dreamweaver just to clunky when all that’s needed is a little tweak here and there to a file. It has support for recognising and colour highlighting all sorts of programming/scripting languages, run macros, and even use a spell checker for regular text documents (need to download dictionary first though). All this and more in a light weight application that doesn’t necessarily need to be installed, just unzip the file and start using, or even point files to the notepad++.exe application file as the default app for a file type. The zip file actually gives 2 directories for different version of the app, unicode and ansi. Ansi isn’t in the install version as this will eventually be dropped, so unicode is the version to go for.

Will the real mario please stand up

Mario – sxsw 2011 film bumper. Great little video of a different type of mario looking for princess peach story. Its got some humour and it’s linked with videogames and parody, so a must watch. Apparently this video was first at sxsw but now it’s been made available to a whole wealth of youtubers, much like ourselves. Enjoy

Video Nasties for Dear Old Bats

Well, the fun just keeps on coming. The new Batman game is looking like a peach – Batman: Arkham City has tranferred all of Gotham’s loons into a brand-spankers new complex that sprawls across the city like a big fat nutcase relaxing on the sofa after a cheeseburger-fest. And the city is so much bigger than their previous den in the asylum that there’s clearly going to be a wider variety of hijinx for the nutjobs – and dear old Bats – to get up to.

Even in this vid there’s helicopter action and explosions ahoy – as well as plenty of head-busting, rib-crushing, grapple-firing tastiness. Ooh, and Catwoman too. But if moving pictures ain’t your thing, check out the new art below. Riddler-tastic.

As we revealed just a few days ago, this little looker is headed our way on October 21st – and it’s clearly shaping up to knock seven shades of shiznit from its already worthy predecessor. And that, game-fans, is simply Bat-tabulous.

Alice? Who the Grig is Alice?

Who doesn’t love the dark? All the cool shizzle goes down in the shadows, and all the best art is tinged with menace. So American McGee’s Alice, a curiously psychotic take on the Lewis Caroll classic, was always going to be a hit with darkhearted PC gamers when it crawled from its eerie little corner back in 2000. But could it cut it for a sequel? Things have changed, and the world is a crueller place. 9/11? Tsunamis in Japan? The storyline off Eastenders where that woman gone done nicked that other one’s bebby. Times are harsh – *shudder*.

Thankfully, your man McGee is no shrinking violet. When evil ups the ante, your man pulls out the emotional trauma. Alice: Madness Returns drops in on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2011, a neat 10 years after the original concluded with our heroine losing her family to a fatal fire and, oop, she’s been in an insane asylum since then. Now she’s out, and seeking to find out what happened to her kin – embarking on a fiendish mission through nightmarish hallucinations that see her, and the game, jumping from the cold shadows of London to the fractured glories of the Wonderland.

Anyhoo, so far we’ve only seen the teasers from GDC – so you can catch up on the weird right here in about ooh, one minute and sixteen. But if the mix of beat-em-up battling and machine-gun-tastic action whets your appetite, stay tuned to the GRiG – we’ll have all your sadistic needs covered til this puppy’s released later this year.

Catherine Craziness Coming

There’s been a lot of FPS-love floating around Grig Towers of late – so now for something completely different. And we mean completely different.

Catherine is a “relationship horror” – an exploration of fidelity that sees you guiding lead man, Vincent as he plunges into the moral morasse of a fiendish love triangle. Does he stick with his loving, but increasingly demanding lady-friend Katherine, or plunge into the exciting world of the temptress, Catherine? As the game progresses, Vincent’s guilt grows and starts to leak into his dreams, manifesting as horribly disfigured monsters and a ticking clock. You make his choices and evade his horrors in a highly stylized concept piece based around “intense, terror-filled gameplay”.

Yep, OK, we’ve no idea what any of that means either, but with direction from Katsura Hashino, and lush character art from Shigenori Soejima, it’s certainly shaping up as pretty goddamn exciting. I’m thinking Snatcher and all that mid-90s Konami madness. Scheduled for summer release on Xbox 360 and PS3 through Atlus USA, stay tuned to the Grig for all the latest…
