Dead Island Discs – Yours For 79p

Dead Island

The supernatural world isn’t what it used to be. Vampires have turned into R-Patz nancies. Werewolves play basketball (for those who are under 30, that’s a Teen Wolf reference…) And zombie game franchises are nothing unless they have their own soundtrack.

Of course, when that game is Dead Island, single-handedly responsible for ripping up the twittersphere with its head-curdling promo vid, we can look the other way. And when the music has become one of the most mashed-up, parodied, yet loved pieces of random internet ephemera of the decade, we might even be vaguely excited. In fact, we might even be tempted to skip along to iTunes and but that sucka – at only 79p, it’s a freakin’ steal!

Well, considering it’s on YouTube, and, er, everywhere, for free, it actually is a steal. Of your money. But hell, that’s what iTunes is for – flittering away your moolah on a load of old wank. So go on, indulge. And here’s the link, because we’re such lovely promo-whores…

Buy me! Buy me!

(And in case you missed it, Dead Island will be a first person, melee based thriller for Xbox 360 and PS3 seeing you battle hordes of zombies with makeshift, customizable weapons. Just thought I’d throw that in – you know, in case anyone here likes games more than downloadable shizzle…)

Shock Horror! New Dead Space 2 DLC – And A Video To Boot

Downloadable content is a contentious issue in Grig Towers. On the one hand, sucking brand new games from cyberspace, and getting add-ons and skimpy Chun-Li costumes directly through your telly, without the need to set foot in the outside world, is every gamer’s dream. On the other, holding back the best content so you can rinse poor gamers for even more of their hard earned pennies is every money-grabbing publisher’s dream. Case in point? Much as I love em, Infinity Ward’s pricing for MW2 map packs is the perfect example – for the price of three new maps (and two that I’ve already paid for on COD 4), I could otherwise get a brand new game off eBay.

Tricky.

So if publishers want to prise the last bit of coin from my clutching, miserly hands, their DLC had better be pretty awes. Thankfully for Visceral Games, they’re bringing to the table two brand-new standalone chapters for the impeccable Dead Space 2. Yep, from March 1st for a mere $6.99 (roughly a fiver to our British chums, at 560 MS points), Xbox/PC owners can own their brand new digital download, Dead Space 2: Severed, and finally quench that Sprawl-based bloodlust. PS3 (Europe) gets the download a day later.

The pack will feature two single player chapters, covering the story of Gabe Weller (from Dead Space Extraction). Old Gabe is packing a brand new security suit, and will be pitted against the Twitcher, the horrific bug from the original game. It’s still a fiver for content that Visceral probably had ready for release with the game – but for deep-space thrills and xenomorph-chills, there are few better place to splash the cash. So just this once, we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Crysis 2 Video Not Enough? How About A Multiplayer Demo To Boot? Hummana hummana!

So there’s no doubting that I’m monogamy-101 when it comes to first person shooters. I’m a peas-in-a-pod, walking hand-in-hand, matching jumpers kind of lover with my one and only, Modern Warfare 2. Forget your Black Ops tossbags*, Halo shizzle*, or Bulletstorm cackfest*, cos if it ain’t Infinity Ward then I ain’t buying. It dinner. At a romantic restaurant where I can gaze lovingly at her shiny disc-like face.

But hold the phone. Because Crysis 2, out on March 25th, is looking like an absolute peach. So much so that I may just have to start secretly texting that little hottie. And having naughty thoughts about her when the lights are out, and MW2 is snoring unknowingly with that M-16-kind of rattle that she has when she’s dreaming. But you?

Maybe you’re not yet ready to ditch your long-time lover and get in on the FPS-swinger scene? Well, cast your faithful little eyes over this launch video’s curves and then let’s talk. That’s right, sweetheart – it’s keys in the bowl time.

And as if that’s not enough to whet your seedy appetite for extra-marital gaming, March 1st sees a brand new Crysis 2 multiplayer demo coming to Xbox Live and PC (bad luck PS3-owners, your instalment is delayed…) This little tease will include two of the game’s 12 maps, “Skyline” and “Pier 17”, as well as two of the shooter’s six play-modes: “Team Instant Action” and “Crash Site”. And all set in Crysis 2’s awesome New York backdrop. All I can say to this news is that I’m already thinking of how I can “work late”, and “have a business trip” and generally excuse myself without MW2 guessing something is up. Hehehe… FPS-adultery rules.

*PS, these games are neither toss, shizzle, or cack, really. Compared to the delightful MW2, maybe there’s some comparative cackiness, but I guess they’re OK, really. OK FPS-fans?! Are we cool?

Murray Halts Ghostbusters 3

Bill Murray has fessed up to being the spanner in the Ghostbusters 3 works, and it seems production could already be underway if he were to get his slime-stopping act in gear. But could it be a good thing? It seems his reluctance to commit might be an important creative check on what could easily be another tragic sequel cash-in that wrecks a classic legacy.

Harold “Egon” Ramis and Dan Ackroyd are on board, as is Ivan Reitman, the director of both the original beauties. But Murray seems reluctant to strap on the pack, telling US radio shockjock Howard Stern that “I’m a problem. There’s a script somewhere, but I haven’t read it yet. I only made one sequel and it was Ghostbusters 2 and it didn’t end up the way it was presented.”

So is the Venk-meister having creative cold feet about a project that would be trying to re-awaken a two-decade old franchise with a cast that’s quite far past it’s prime?

“Ivan wants to make it and I owe him,” he told Stern. “He’s puzzled that I haven’t gotten to this one. I’ll get to it, I feel bad. I got a message and I think people – I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings – it’s not the foremost thing in my mind, so I don’t think about it.”

Hmmm. The latest news says the script has been drafted by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, the writers of the US version of The Office. So far, so alarming. Why? Because it was Ramis and Ackroyd who put the magic in both the original scripts – if they’re no longer considered up to the task, that’s the whole engine of the film at risk. And maybe it’s just Steve Carrell I don’t like, but the US take on the Office is packing buh.

But that’s not all ectoplasm-fans. The rumour mill has it that the story will be a “new generation” spin with fresh faces joining the team. Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Aston Kutcher and Michael Cera are all rumoured inductees and, with the exception of the excruciatingly lame Kutcher, that’s a high class list – but totally wrong for Ghostbusters’ brand of subtly-played, middle-aged silliness. These are films where the character and script were the stars, not the actors. Rogen would e my shout if any of those. But the biggest worry is the similarity to the Indiana Jones debacle – though I love Shia LaBeouf, the young faces angle in that film just made the old boys look past it, and accentuated how creaky Harrison Ford’s performance was.

So Bill, stick to your guns. If Ghostbusters 3 isn’t gonna work, turn it down. Because if there’s one thing we know, it’s that everything was fine with our system until the power grid was turned off by dickless here.

Is this true?

Yes, it’s true. This man has no dick.

New Apple Mac Book Pro’s out now. oh yeah, which one shall i buy?

We’ve been waiting, watching the rumors, and finally here it is. And the big boys have been quaded.
macbookpro ad 24/02/2011
Looks like new products to the line, two 13″ models, on with a 2.3GHZ duel core i5 processor and the other a nice 2.7GHZ i7. Both with 4GB ram and integrated intel hd 3000 graphics processors. These little beauts will set you back £999 and £1,299 respectively, though the i7 has the slightly larger 500GB hdd. Nothing said about the rumored hybrid.

The 15 inch models come as a 2.0GHZ or 2.2GHZ quad i7, 4GB ram, integrated intel hd 3000 plus AMD (formally ATI) radion discrete graphics chips, the 2GHZ model has AMD Radion HD 6490m with 256MB GDDR5 ram, and 500GB hdd, and the 2.2GHZ has an AMD Radion HD 6750m with 1GB GDDR5 and 720GB hdd. The 15 inchers will set you back £1,549 and £1,849 respectively again. The 17 inch option is the same as the higher spec 15 but with bigger screen, this is fgoing for £2,099. All prices are for the standard base options, there are upgrades available for extra ram, hdd, including ssd.

The real question though, is how much money can i save by purchasing through the university network, luckily i grabbed a few print screens on tuesday of the then current models and their prices for comparison. Just need that inheritance cheque to make an appearence, move some funds around and then its osx heaven, and some boot camp windows 7 action ofcourse, finally a laptop that can use the Hi Def profile in xna 4. Yay.

In brief, quad core i7 is tasty ^_^.

Nintendo Takes 3DS Out To Launch

3DS

Well, spank my three dimensional ass. Nintendo today announce the 3DS launch titles to accompany its new baby’s release on March 27th and, wouldn’t you know it, there’s actually a few humdingers.

Sadly, there’s not a hum, or even a ding, about any of Nintendo’s own launch titles with Pilotwings Resort leading a sorry bunch of 3D gaming misfits that also includes nintendogs and Steel Diver (“a submarine game that includes strategy and combat”. Erm, Battleships anyone?) Nope, the first you’ll see of Nintendo itself in the quality department will be later in 2011 when Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, and a new installment in the Mario Kart™ series finally see the light of day.

Nope, the only decent games heading our way anytime soon are all third-party. Capcom’s Super Street Fighter IV 3D and Konami’s Pro Evo 2011 are both tipped for launch by July, and of course there’ll be a Sims 3 and Lego Star Wars III clone to pump up the numbers. These are, thankfully, somewhat juicy.

But wait, let’s take stock.

Three sub-par titles on launch day, a clutch of 3D rehashes in the second-wave, and no specified date for the Nintendo big guns. Is this the future of gaming?! The feel so far is that the 3DS has nothing to offer beyond the gimmick – there’s nothing here to suggest that the new tech is pushing any boundaries. Still, as long as Chun Li looks good in 3D I’m not too distressed.

For the full list of launch titles, have a gander below.

• Pilotwings Resort
• Steel Diver
• nintendogs™ + cats
• Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition from CAPCOM
• The Sims™ 3 from EA
• Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS
• Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
• LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™
• RIDGE RACER® 3D from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.
• Super Monkey Ball™ 3D from SEGA
• BUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSE™ from Square-Enix, Inc.
• SAMURAI WARRIORS®: Chronicles from TECMO KOEI AMERICA Corp.
• Asphalt™ 3D from UBISOFT
• Combat of Giants™: Dinosaurs 3D from UBISOFT
• Rayman® 3D from UBISOFT
• Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars from UBISOFT

Later in 2011:

• The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D,
• Star Fox 64™ 3D
• Kid Icarus™: Uprising
• Mario Kart™

Free DLC As Developer Apologises for TDU2 “Issues”

TDU2

The debate rages on about the quality of pre-release games testing, and today it received a fresh kick up its forum-based arse as the developer for Test Drive Unlimited 2 was forced into an apology for the game’s many bugs. Atari / Eden Games have issued a statement to say soz and, seemingly recognising the extent of the problems, they have even agreed to release the first DLC – a comprehensive premium pack including new cars – for free.

The debate on games testing has been sparked by what seems to be an increasing need for games to be patched multiple times to fix errors in the weeks, or even, months after their release. With both Xbox and PS3 now linked full time to the web, it’s become an easy band-aid for those publishers who are keen to hit the market with their latest release – even if errors remain.

Gamers are frustrated that problems aren’t ironed out in testing – especially with bigger glitches that cause full scale crashes. Developers meanwhile have been adamant that even thorough testing can’t account for every problem as games become increasingly complex. Judge for yourself with TDU2 – should these problems have been allowed out in a full-price, brand new game? Today’s announcement seems to be a shot in the arm for the “more-testing” camp – though either way, it’s just nice to see some DLC without the rip-off price tag (hint hint Capcom!!)

The full apology was released in an open letter, as below.

To the TDU2 community,

Thank you for your continued support and feedback. Our community has been amazing and helped us quickly identify a number of issues, which we have made significant progress in addressing in the upcoming patches.

We really appreciate your patience in this matter and we would like to announce that we will be making the first premium DLC for the game free for everybody as a way of saying thank you.

The Exploration Pack contains new wrecks to be discovered that unlock the Lancia Stratos version Rallye and 1969 Dodge Charger.

We now have fixes for all of the following issues that have already gone live on PC and will follow shortly once patches are approved by Microsoft and Sony, respectively.

Issues Fixed:

*Logging into the game has been improved
*Once into the game the online network experience is now much more stable in all areas
*Save games no longer corrupt
*Existing corrupted save games will be repaired in many cases
*Friends lists are now populated
*Invites now work correctly
*Clubs have been brought back online
*Exploits to gain money have been fixed
*Casino access has been improved
*Players will no longer lose money because of the Casino bug

The team spends a great deal of time looking at community feedback, so please keep posting your comments to the official TDU2 forums and we look forward to seeing you in Ibiza.

Sincerely,

The TDU2 Development Team

Prices prices Portals prices

Today seems like a good day to talk about upcoming games, pre order prices and some deals on some past games of yonder.

advert for valvesoftware portal and half life 2 episode 2 deal on steam

First up is Half life 2 – episode 2 on sale on steam, head on over to http://store.steampowered.com/ and sign up or log in to view prices in GBP, currency is US Dollars by default, atleast for me, maybe it’s an isp proxy thing i don’t know. anyway, said game is a beautiful 75% off until thursday 4pm pacific time. Though as it’s NOT currently letting me go through with the transaction saying there is an error, i cannot vouch for it actually happening, the deal must be soo good its screwing with their servers. I joke, there’s loads of big games making their way for pre orders, including portal 2, with a pre order price of £26.99 at 10% off, and with a free copy of portal, the first one, which if you have it already, and you really should, then you can give it to a friend. This is a great deal considereing amazon have this pc/mac pre order price for 1p shy of £30 bones, and an rrp of £35.

With the previous news that the PS3 version of portal 2 will gain you a free steam version, i think i may hold out for this one. And ofcourse the XBOX 360 version as that’s where my achievemo’s are at. Word.

Currently Amazon.co.uk have portal 2 at 39.99 for ps3 and xbox 360.

On the SEGA front though, £22.99 upfront now will get you 4 games in 1 disc with the dreamcast collection due out on friday the 25th of February. Had i not already purchased 2 of the games on xbox live i would say this is a good deal, especially as Space channel five was a really good game for what it was. Sonic adventure was a huge game, a little buggy and shoddy voice acting but still great none the less. sega bass fishing well, its good but no Crazy taxi. I mean the latter has a song especially about it by Aminal. check out http://www.aminal-theband.com for more on that little beaut.
