Darkstalkers are not dead!

Street Fighters retro stablemate Darkstalkers is fresh from the grave today, ressurected in full on PSN glory as Capcom confirm that they will be bringing the fisticuff related tomfoolery of Morrigan (star of a million breast-centred items of Deviant Art work) and co to our screens on the 29th Nov (well, actually a bit later for us Euro punks).

Reports have been flying around for a while now since one of those pesky ESRB ratings tipped us off, much as it has done in the past for the likes of the recent return of Daytona USA, but this is the first official word on the matter.

Hilariously, despite launching in only a couple of weeks from now, CVG today mused ‘Capcom hasn’t specified whether this will be a straight port of the game or if it will be giving the monster-themed brawler a high-definition make over’.
We can answer that one for you:

Neither.

What this quite obviously will be is the PSOne game that launched many moons ago, complete with its stripped down animation, such was the aforementioned machines wheezing underperformance in the 2D department. Capcom certainly wont be bandying about any type of filter related shenanigans with this, lest they would be singing and dancing all over the show as we speak. No my fellow Griggers, this is a straight cut and paste job if ever we smelt one, and clearly an easy conversion to make a quick buck.

But it’s fair enough though.

We certainly wouldn’t sniff at the release of Darkstalkers in any incarnation, however we do wonder that if this is Capcom testing the water for a much rumoured new Darkstalkers game, we’d have to concede this is probably not the best way to go about it. The PSOne game was notoriously inferior to its arcade counterpart (Have at thee Sony. Have. At. Thee.), and was a shadow of the superior Saturn sequels that followed. Fans of the series generally tend to know this and may be put off the purchase, but we stand to be corrected! But, for all you ‘stalkers out there hungering for a new instalment, this should at least put a mild smile on your faces and keep you going for a bit! You never know, as Capcom said themselves, ‘Darkstalkers are not dead!’. Unless they were trolling. Or just meant this rerelease. Which is likely.

Next time on Grig: Capcom ponders starting work on Street Fighter V pending the results of the rerelease of the Spectrum version of Street Fighter 2 on Virtual Console.

Yeah. I made that bit up.

720 inbound?

Following on from yesterday’s article by actually bothering to write something new for the Grig, I venture forth once more and set my sights firmly on the future as we plot a course for the next generation!

Now this is no Star Trek related tomgriggery my dear mongers of mucusade (thats like Lucozade, except made of bile.), oh no. This, my fellow leviathans of lethargic letchery, is all about the next wave of consoles that will be gracing our humble living rooms, spotty teenage bedrooms, and steel bar motifed hovels of inmates spending their days at her majesties pleasure, at some point yet to be confirmed.

‘But what has prompted the Grig only now to step into the fray during these times of constant next-gen speculation?’, I hear you cry. Well, boredom mainly. But also because reports reverberating around the halls of Internet domainary far and wide have been alive with the sound of an announcement that might not be too far off!

Basically, a source close to the site spawned by pretentious bag of putrid slush of a magazine, Edge, has been spilling their guts before the very fellows that man the helm of said vessel. Apparently, this source revealed that Ubisoft Montreal are currently in possession of “target boxes based on the intended specifications of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor.” Intriguing indeed my dear Griggers! But there’s more!

Reports have also gone on to say that other large developers are likewise dipping their fingers into the next-gen pie with convicted serial video game offender EA already dabbling with said tech, no doubt trying to find the copy and paste function in preparation for the new FIFA as we speak!

A more solid version of the proper development kit is allegedly scheduled to be making its merry way to developers far and wide come the end of the year, with Microsoft looking to be blubbing like excitable school girls at a JLS concert when they take the lid off their new beast with an announcement at the CES Expo in January – part of which maybe the potential release date of late 2012 thats being bandied round. Not long to go then before we find out if this hullabaloo is for real, or if someone’s just looking to grind our Grig!

Additionally the site also reports that the wheels are well in motion over at Playstation’s developmental torture chamber, with head honchos already waving their Sony branded cattle prods menacingly at the staff of one of their ‘major’ studios in between meetings plotting how badly they’re gonna shaft us Europeans this time around as they ready their next behemoth for action. I look forward to many vacant queue barriers at midnight launches, a la PS3, all across the country!

Oh, and just to round things off nicely, we should probably mention the Wii U. But that’s quite enough about that.

Street Fighter revives the Grig again!

I’d heard about the Mary Celeste but never thought i’d ever encounter such an eerie scenario myself. But as I stepped out on to the decks of the good ship Grig Orig and looked around, ’twas all I could think about. The place was in disrepair, clearly having not seen any use in quite a while, and where there once had been plenty of activity, there was now not a person in sight. No The Grig, no pages of scrawled notes of a million scrapped articles blowing to and fro on the breeze, and not so much as one member from the cast of FHM’s 100 sexiest women swabbing the decks in Grig Orig issue bikinis as they were when I last left. My thoughts immediately flew past the prospect of taking the opportunity to check exactly what The Grig was hiding in that locked top drawer that he had in his room as I suddenly heard a bleeping coming from the command centre of this once mighty vessel. I walked through the dense fog that swirled around my ankles as it pirouetted in ghostly wisps just above the lonesome decks, creaks underfoot meeting my every step before echoing into the gloom as if trying to flee the ghoulish vessel. I reached the command centre and pushed the door open. The bleeping became louder. I paused momentarily as i mused over times gone by. Long ago seemed the days when I would sit in there in full Vader attire imaging I was righting the faltering wrongs of the once great Sith Lord by successfully fending off Rebel scum from my very own Death Star while several clones of mid twenties Teri Hatchers served me slice after slice of amended Dominos Might Meaty. But the mirage of those great times evaporated from my minds eye as I perused the room, chancing upon the one flickering light still emanating in an other wise darkened and dead area in my peripheral vision. I walked over, flicking a sheet of paper draped over what I found to be a monitor back off of the screen it was obscuring, and taking the dusty mouse in my hand that lay nearby, clicked on a flashing icon stating ‘ALERT!’. The bleeping stopped as a message flooded the screen with information that caused me to draw a breath and gasp in a manner that strained my innards. My eyes widened and a cold chill ran through me as the message straight from Grig Towers investigative super Bat Computer began to register in my mind. As I read, a second chilly wave suddenly ran through me as I realised that it was down to me to move and relay this message to the world. The feeling subsided as adrenalin kicked in and began surging through my being. If there was anything that was to bring a new article to the online chronicle of Grig Orig, it was surely this! The good ship Grig Orig was suddenly alive again as I sprang into immediate action, grabbing a nearby chair and thumping down in it before proceeding to type out the following transmission with smoking finger tips:

Super Street Fighter 2 Megadrive -Update!

Ahoy my merry Griggers of guffawnary! And today we have a fresh chapter in a 16-bit saga that’s been 17 years in coming! For today (and of course, late as usual) we can tell you that Capcom have released an updated Megadrive version of Super Street Fighter 2 on the virtual console with… drumroll… online play! Yes that’s right! Hitting the ‘sole just this week, the old classic Megadrive Kombat-killer is up and about from its death bed after wheezing its way close to a clapped out oblivion, breathing now with the aid of a 2011 online play enabled iron lung giving it a fresh infusion of life! Admittedly, it’s on the Wii so nobody will be on there to play it against, but any Street Fighter news is good news here at Grig Orig! Except if it’s about gems. Tssk!

As I hit return to confirm the story wing its merry way to the front page of Grig Orig, I sat back contented by the fact that I had just changed the world for the better. Already I could sense the levels of joy begin to rise from every nation and I smiled accordingly. And thus, taking a nearby crowbar in one hand, I got up from my chair and headed in the direction of The Grigs room.

Well, that’s all for today folks. As you were.

Oh, and as it turned out the aforementioned Grig crew just had shore leave for the day and were at The Grigs new apartment as he wanted to show off his pad. But that’s enough about the latest addition to his collection of sanitary ware.

Kinect for Windows SDK beta 2 is out

It’s great that Microsoft have put efforts in helping the community utilize the power of kinect, and now we’re seeing proof that they are continuing that commitment. Today i saw a news item in my rss feeds from Microsoft Research Kinect for Windows, There was a lovely speech about what a great year it’s been with the Kinect and what it has done for the Interactive Entertainment Business side of microsoft, and mention that the commercial product is coming somewhere early 2012 and how its going to re-imagine Kinect for Windows, but most importantly, they have started a blog over at http://www.kinectforwindows.org/ and released beta 2 of the Kinect for Windows SDK.

Beta 2 bring faster performance by 20% and increased accuracy in skeletel tracking and joint recognition. They note that improved skeletel tracking that can track the skeletel image of one or two people in the field of view can make it easier to create gesture-driven applications, something i never got round to doing. Come to think of it there were some Kinect books coming out this fall, maybe an interesting Christmas present for your hacker intrigued friends and family, and by hacker i mean that person who likes playing with technology and making it do things, not someone who wants to steal your credit card details etc, hackers are generally good people, there’s just a missinformation thing going on with the title.

Of course the Official SDK is just one route to take for playing with kinect, there are unofficial drivers out there and code libraries to use that make it more accessible on other OS (Operating Systems) to use the Kinect, and are in fact what originally brought about the movement using the kinect with a computer to do wonderful awesome things known as Kinect Hacks.

Street Fighter X Tekken Update Ahoy

WARNING – A massively outdated article follows!

It’s been a long time, and I indeed shouldn’t have left you, and regretfully I plead guilty to the crime of leaving you without so much as a dope beat to step to. But fret not all ye that grace the seven seas of Internet domainary atop the rigging of the good ship Grig! New York Comic Con has come and gone (actually, quite far gone now) and Capcom showed up in force as always, and trailing along amongst the usual trawled out Resident Evil nonsense and… some other games that Capcom probably make, there was of course, Street Fighter x Tekken! Thus, by my calculations (grigonometry, naturally) it is time for me to step forth once more to grace the Grig with the finest type of classy literature this side of an issue of Nuts! If that’s even still going.

And Lo! Ignoring the disappointment inflicted upon my good self by Ono and co at NY Comic Con and their new-character-no-show (except Rufus. But we’ll let the crowds awkward lack of applause reflect how much anyone cares about that.), we delve into what they did choose to let us in on as we squint to try and make out any kind of clarity through the increasingly bespeckled window of woe that is Street Fighter X Tekken. Thus, join us now my Griggers as we get down on our hands and knees and begin picking through this mess of a game that’s been smeared across the floor. There’s gotta be something there still worth getting excited about, surely? Why are you shaking your heads?

Street Fighters Blue Shell

Okay, lets start with the big talking point thats stirred the community into a frothing rage thats boiling over as we speak. The gem system. For want of any type of comparison, it sounds very similar to Materia from Final Fantasy VII. Equip your character with certain gems that bring out new abilities and gameplay possibilities. Hmm. Interesting. So far, so… RPG. But with reference to a fighting game of yore, it does smell a little like a progression of the gems you could pick up in Marvel Super Heroes, and that was a darn fine game. Except now you have to pay real money for them, as Capcom is already wielding their DLC hammer above their sparkly heads. And I’m guessing paying for rubbish gems is not much of an incentive so what are probably going to be the best ones will be the DLC, no? Pay to win? Oh level playing field, where art thou?! Pah, Capcom doth spit in thee’s face! In the last few days Seth Killian upon being asked about how these gems would be released claimed that it was still undecided. Undecided, or being reconsidered due to the monumental backlash that’s going on, hmm?

Lets face it – we all know what Capcom are like with their DLC tomschemery, and there be dollar signs twinkling in their beady eyes! For indeed my Grigs, not stopping at the alternate costume charging affront to decency, Capcom have added yet another avenue of exploitation to their roadmap of evil. And as Capcom lead their increasingly sorry looking cash-cow down that very seedy looking cul de sac, milking mit cocked menacingly under its monetary teat, the realisation about the true direction of this game is becoming all too apparent: After dipping their toe into the Uncle Scrooge-esque DLC money pool with their costume pack and shadow mode nonsense, Capcom this time have taken the concept of ripping us off and are building a game around it. By Capcoms own admission, the gem system will be ‘core’ to the main game, citing this as being a reason as to why there will be no mode that will be gem free as is being hoped for by the community. And yet, they are going to charge for it. True you allegedly get 200 or so straight out the box (enjoy waiting for muppets online to pick their 5 gems for each of their 2 characters. Its bad enough waiting for them to pick one character and one Ultra in Super.) but already the DLC preorder exclusive gems have been announced. Yes, a full 6 months before the title is out. Disgraceful.

But lets hold our horses a moment. Whilst Capcom ripping us off these days is all part and parcel of their new games and we by no means forgive them for it, let us save a rant about how they’re becoming the scum on the games industries anus till another day and instead, let’s turn our eyes to what these gems actually are. According to Capcoms various minions, they are ability gems that can be assigned to each character, five apiece, and then bring out different abilities based on both individual gems, and gem combinations. We are assuming that this is what Ono was alluding to a few months ago when he spoke about in the future having different versions of characters specifically tailored to fit the player, eg, one guys Ryu being different to another guys Ryu. Divided into various categories, the gems specifically spoken of so far are auto block (Wii players dream), auto throw tech (Wii players dream), speed boost, and context specific enhancements such as added strength after receiving or dishing out a specific number of hits.

Sounds… rubbish.

But sadly, the Wii reference is probably not actually a million miles off, and as that excuse of a machines influence rubs off on another game, we cower in the wake of Capcom actually using the term ‘party atmosphere’ in reference to their latest brawler. Oh dear. It would seem that Capcom are looking for this game to be their equivalent of Smash Bros. as they try to expand their audience (at the expense of the one they already have, clearly). Now I can’t comment on Smash as I’ve never played it on the account of it looking like a stupid mess, but I can say that SFxTekken was looking a lot better before they started crowbarring all this extra cack in to it. We just gotta hope they know what the grig they’re doing.

Pandora-ing to the whims of idiots

One of the other modes thats raised an eyebrow recently is Pandora Mode. The games story (?!) explains that some cosmic cube nonsense coming from outter space – and looking just like the all spark from Transformers – has arrived on Earth and gives new powers to people in fights… for some reason. Sounds like an award winner. Anyway, it’s basically just some over powered variant of Juri’s Feng Shui Engine (don’t know where that will leave her when shes announced) that you can activate at the expense of one of your two characters, most usefully at the end of your life to swipe that last minute victory. But here’s the thing – you gotta finish your opponent off in 8 seconds or else you’ll drop KO’d on the floor and lose the round.

Huh.

Well at least this doesn’t seem so bad now compared to the gems!

Show some character… NOW!!!

Of course, after the insult of the half hearted SSFIV Arcade Edition upgrades – or rather, lack of – I really don’t know why I put any kind of faith in Capcom to not grig me right off. After having gone a week after seeing the new Street Fighter character teasers which appeared to show Vega, Balrog, and my personal favourite Juri, I would have thought it would be the perfect time to properly announce the new challengers at Comic Con. I sat in fevered anticipation awaiting a grand reveal! Instead, they show three more teasers for Tekken characters (You know how it goes by now. A hand here, a shoulder there. Its more like a freakin shopping channel for Dr. Frankenstein!) and we got to watch Ono, Harada, and a bunch of randoms play a game of American Football. What the…? Is it just me, or is the hype building for these new games really starting to lose its buzz? Sheesh…

So to conclude, while the wind may have been taken out of my sails by Juri’s no show at NYCC, it certainly stings a little less when Capcom continue to take the entirety of their own wind out of the whole game with rubbish like the gem system. But like the suckers for punishment that we are, we’ll keep a beady eye on the games dwindling progress, as only time will tell for sure if we’ll be treated to an actual decent title, or if we’ve just been sifting for solids in a stream of diarrhoea. The jury – and in fact, Juri – are still out.

Grrrrr xcode 4.2 woes

Recently i started a new job where i have to learn to develop iPhone apps, which is pretty cool and interesting, better than android too. But just recently we’ve updated to xcode 4.2, and here lies a few problems, i was part way through a project when we upgraded and then it would no longer deploy to my first gen ipod touch, or the work iPhone 3G we had for testing. Fortunately this was fairly simple to fix, in the build settings near the top there are options for architectures. in the top main one it probably says armv7 ‘$(ARCHS_STANDARD_32_BIT)’ and we want support for armv6 for ipod 1st gen and iPhone3G, click it and select other, now add with the + symbol and type ‘armv6’ without the quotes and click done, it should hopefully say amrv6 ‘$(ARCHS_STANDARD_32_BIT)’ now for all the sub options too, great. Build Active Achitectures Only should be set to No apparrently, and Valid Archetectures should read armv6 armv7.

That should be it for a project started pre xcode 4.2, though its posible that the Compiler for C/C++/Objective-C needs to be set to the other option, which might in turn cause more errors, see how it goes, unless you started the project in 4.2, in which case continue reading in the vain hope something might work.

I thought this was fixed, however the new project that i started in xcode 4.2 still didn’t deploy to my 1st gen ipod, now to fix it i had to change the projectname-info.plist to armv6 only, its an array, item 0 armv6, delete the armv7, others have had success with both in, i had to remove 7. Still not fixed yet, there’s more.

Also ios pre 4 doesn’t recognise a line in the – (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions function of the appdelegate.m file
comment the following line out and add the line underneath, its doing a similar thing but in a way ios 3.1.3 understands
//self.window.rootViewController = self.viewController;
[self.window addSubview:self.viewController.view];

That should work, but it likely will no longer work for ios 5, urgh, i’ve fixed this by using the conditional checks.
float version = [[[UIDevice currentDevice] systemVersion] floatValue];
if (version >= 4.0)
{
self.window.rootViewController = self.viewController;
}
else
{
[self.window addSubview:self.viewController.view];
}

This time C/C++/Objective-C had to be set to AppleLLVM Compiler 3.0 for me. Hope this may of helped, if you have any other additions please comment to help others, thanks

Gears Of War Drama Rocks Sleepy English Town

20111029-224446.jpg

Residents of Ryde were packing their bags in fear today after the appearance of an emergence hole signalled an imminent attack on the town from the Locust Horde.

The filthy aliens have never been seen before in the Isle of Wight, or indeed in real life, but the giant crater in Cross Street raised concerns that Emergence Day was imminent – and locals were taking no chances. Hundreds of petrified shoppers fled the scene, which was just outside Top Shop, and by midday the town was eerily quiet. Though admittedly, it was also a bit rainy.

Members of the council’s emergency highways team arrived at the site within hours, and were expected to lob bolo grenades into the hole to prevent the alien swarms from bursting out and implementing their despicable plan for the annihilation of the human race. But in the end they just put some bollards around it and told a few old people to watch their step.

A spokesman for the Coalition of Ordered Governments was unavailable for comment on today’s intergalactic drama. But a note on the council’s website did say they hope to fix the road by next Tuesday.

UPDATE: Townsfolk gather for vigil to pay their respects to fallen comrades. Also, the street lights were out and someone dropped a 20p near the hole, so…

Daytona USA as it should be, out now XBLA

Daytona on an XBOX 360 is awesome, it looks a lot sharper than the saturn version, doesn’t suffer the bad pop ups or clipping, but still has that daytona look, unlike the Dreamcast updated version that looked slightly weird, still good though. This version is classic arcade version done well, and seems to play true, i’m a bit rusty but it’s good, thank you Sega. Now comission the same thing but for Sega Rally and Nights into dreams and i’m set.

Daytona USA is available on XBOX 360 and PS3 in selected regions, the XBOX version is 800 Microsfot points, which is an absolute barg if you ask me, its far better than many racers out there today (maybe i’ve my retro goggles on), it may not have 50 tracks and a hundred cars buts it’s what a game should be, fun, well designed and look great. Of course if you like that crashing bs in burnout or simulation drivers then this isn’t for you. This game is retro arcade style at its best.

Online mode seemed a bit scarce on the first day, but is improving, the ability to play against 8 human players over the internet is great fun, with plenty of options, including cpu controlled cars, mirrored and reversed tracks etc. The real beauty of a few select tracks are that you can really hone your skill at them instead of being adequate on a large number of tracks. Maybe that’s just me being lazy. But i love this game, i sick now, but it’s all about the perfect powerslide and shaving them valuable seconds off the time trial, tip: slam from 4th gear into 2nd then either back to fourth or 3 depending on your needs, you can’t go sequentially, it has to be direct.

The single player modes bring endurance racing into the mix as it did on the saturn, plus there are some challenges to complete, some of which pretty much teach you how you can corner and almost force you to learn how to corner at speed, and the classic boost start, well actually it doesn’t tell you how to do it, it just makes you try until you get it right, basically rev in the mid yellow while holding brake, then when the lights go green drop the brake and go go go ^_^.

if this was a proper review and not me rambling, i would give this a 9/10, i drop the point just because it forces you to use analog controls for steering brake and reverse, also i actually like the other track in the CCE version that came out on the saturn, they would of made a nice extra, infact, that would be one of the few times i would happily pay for dlc.

Minecraft 1.9 pre 5 is up for download for the impatient

What up minecraftalonians, if you’re one of those who likes to take a sneak peak at whats new, then you maye be intereseted in tehis here link http://assets.minecraft.net/1_9-pre5/minecraft.jar which will be the latest build for hardcore fans to test out, as usual this is an official link from @jeb_ one of the developers of minectraft, he also tweets out the web page with the list of bugs to check against if you would like to be super helpful, see here http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Known_bugs/Version_1.9pre4, and then there is a discussion about new bugs etc on http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Known_bugs/Version_1.9pre5.

If you’re new to this type of update, then you will need to do a couple of things, first backup your old, 2nd plonk in the the new file in exchange for the old, for windows the default Minecraft save is in C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft though you will have to enable show hidden files in the folder options, in a windows file browser (knows as explorer, not to be confused with ie the web browser) there should be menus, if not (like on vista of win 7) press the alt key should bring this up, then go to tools, folder options, view, show hidden files or something to that effect, you should now see the app data file. now in the .minecraft folder is a bin folder, and in there is a minecraft.jar file, so backup (copy the .minecraft folder and put paste it somewhere safe) and replace minecraft.jar with the one you just downloaded, and thats it.

OSX users will find it in Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/minecraft, lion users will need to show the library using the terminal app and typing “chflags nohidden ~/Library/” without the quotes, same process copy the minecraft folder and paste somewhere safe, replace minecraft.jar in the bin folder with the one you downloaded.

That should be it, in other news, it’s been announced that Minecraft for XBOX 360 should be released in the spring time, but the first playable version will be previewed at the MineCon event in Vegas in a few weeks, MineCon is the official launch event for Minecraft.
