“Mind If I Take Off My Pants?” – The Duke, 2011

And also more Duke! This little gem caused quite a stir over in the good ol’ U.S. of A, with instant shouts of misogyny in response to the video’s blatant sex-appeal. There was even an early clamour for DNF to be banned. (Don’t they realise how long we’ve waited for this sucker?!) Of course, Gearbox were unfazed – effectively responding with a Duke-style two fingers (and probably a gravelly-voiced comment to boot.) They did also have a slightly more philosophical response too – suggesting Duke is a self-centred egomaniac to whom the whole world is a hedonistic plaything, hence they’re projecting, and examining, his own personality failings into the game by showing how he surrounds himself with women, and how he treats them.

Ahem. Nice try, mammary-fans. But I suspect another motive…

Boobs. Because if you’re a game developer locked in some underground sweat-shack, churning out code rather than putting your C+ style moves on the ladykind, you’ve gotta have a release. And oh mama, do they release in DNF!

Still, there is some substance to the ‘Box’s claims to artistic merit. After all, to take one example of a similarly thoughtful bent, in Dostoevsky’s seminal examination of the fragile killer’s mind in Crime and Punishment, we’re not spared the brutality of the landlady being hacked amidst the cranium with a brutal Russian axe. Oh no, no, no – when Raskolnikov is manifesting, Fyodor makes us watch. And if our favourite Ruski author were tapping out his thoughts into a game today rather than crusty old parchment back in the 1800s? Why, I think we’d be somewhere in Bulletstorm territory…

So cut the Duke some slack. He’s a modern classic (just a very, very badly behaved one).

Now, where are my Kleenex?

UPDATE: And here’s a lovely behind-the-scenes vid with the dev team. A little bit Duke history, and the devs admitting it’s childish – lovely stuff!

Project update, collisions yo!, also model textures, many spawnings etc

Been a long while since the project blog was updated, been spending a lot of time on the models in maya, and finally got some texturing done, code wise there is collision detection for the birds and the arrows, and now a breakthrough with collisions between birds and meanies, it was soo simple i can’t believe i had so much trouble with it before, doh!

Pictured above is the meanie, the main moving bad guy of the game, it still needs some better texturing done but if that doesn’t happen its no big deal. Alhtough on eof the test modules was spawning many cubes, the game is now sapning many birds and monsters properly, its all good.

Well the game is coming along nicely, hopefully i’ll put some more updates soon, but most of its been done now

Krime and Punishment – More MK9 Fun

The case against Mortal Kombat is clear, your honour. Today, we will prove beyond reasonable doubt why this sucka is guilty as charged – of being the only exciting beat em up on the gaming horizon. So get out your legal pads, Kombateers, because this case is compelling…

Firstly, on the night of April 5th, I put it to you that Capcom did start acting like groons. (Well, even more than usual.) Failing to take the opportunity to do a proper SSFIV Arcade Edition is a kick in the nuts for real fans – more rip-off DLC looks like all we’re getting – and makes it feel like the franchise is running out of steam.

Secondly, members of the jury, consider Exhibit A – the latest video release from those fine people at WBIE. With tasty new shots of Shang Tsung working his gory magic, all those memories of 2D-fighters of yore are flooding back. And it’s clear the defendant is a filthy little blood-fiend reworked for the next-gen! (Objection! Speculative!! Over-RULED!!!)

Finally, members of the jury, there’s the gameplay. I put it to you that Dibbs has been playing the demo and slowly, gradually, coming to the view that it’s, actually, pretty grigging playable. Yes, that whole “hold button for block” thing is a shizzer, and I’ll never really be convinced it works for a 2D fighter, but overall MK9 is a playable little beast. The evidence speaks for itself legal-fans – this is actually a little beaut.

So, get your anti-psychotic medication in now – because this summer is looking like a gore-fest. The prosecution rests, your honour.

(Guilty? Innocent? Deliver your verdict below.)

I love the snow, not sure about the rain though, but uber love storms. enough blabbering on with the vid.

Minecraft gets a release date 11/11/11 pure poetry in numbers

Minecraft Logo
At the risk of literally repeating everything notch has said over at his blog http://notch.tumblr.com. Mojang had a meeting today and decided to say that Minecraft will be released on the 11th November 2011. Now i know what you’re thinking, it’s already out! But my compadres, it’s still technically only in beta, this has been one of those great recursive development methodologies where stuff gets added, it’s released, they get feedback, stuff gets added, while at the same time the punters are reporting bugs to be fixed, its like outsourcing development processes, except it’s to the happy customers, mind blowing business model there notch. 🙂

What else, oh, looks like we can expect the next new update next week, certainly in the next couple of weeks it seems, and it’s not just a little bitty update, it’s got some weather happening, bit of snow bit of rain, all of which makes changes to some of the environment, ice will re form in colder areas, and there’s even boltz of lightning on the way, sounds exciting, i love storms, what better storm could there be but a blocky minecraft one 🙂

But that’s not all…..

Achievmo’s
It seems that notch had a little grumpy mood with some JSON, which is basically key value pairs that gets sent as a string hither and thither, some RESTful web services use this file format instead of sending xml with SOAP. Anyway his JSON woes seem to be related to the achievements and stats functionality that is to be added to version 1.5. Can’t wait, this game gets more awesome by the minute. Just need to finish my final year project so i can dedicate some time to finding diamond, i feel like such a cheat when i give myself some from the server. Keep up the good work Mojang.

New Commodore Style Computers, Yes Please :D

New computer by CommodoreThe back of the new Commodore 64 lookalike
If you’re the kind of person who actually reads this blog, then you are more than aware that Commodore are the mac daddy home computers of the 1980’s. From the vic 20 to the Amiga 1200, these were prosperous times for our beloved Commodore. Some of us had the C64, primarily for gaming, others had the later plus 4 which had a word processor and spreadsheet built in, further down the line there was the Amigas, these new babies used disks rather than tape, which provided a much needed speed boost in loading times. But whatever your flavour, the commodore is a strong name in the retro hearts of anyone 30+.

So bring on the news, the Commodore brand is coming back, this time not as a bespoke system, but as a chasis of retro goodness, fiitting in the neccessary pc components found in small form factor computers, the c64 breadbin lookalike for instance comes in a range of diefferent packages, from a bare bones for custom builders at a cost of $250, to a duel core atom processor, 4GB Ram, nvidia ION2 graphics, 1TB HDD, and an optional bluray drive for $895. They are shipping world wide, though you may have to use stickers to have the correct key labels. well the mac comes with American keyboard layout so no biggy right?

As for the Commodore OS, apparantly this isnt ready yet so you’d need to be armed with a windows 7 licence if you’re not comfortable with Ubuntu or similar linux distros. When the OS is ready it will be mailed to you, and should be a commodore version of linux, with emulation and a classic games package at the ready. Apparently there will be options at boot up to choose between the direct c64 emulation, and the windows environment if you have that installed. Simples. ooo, Goosebumps.
New Commodore VIC Pro

The breadbin C64 is not the only computer on offer, there are other all in one keyboard computers such as the new Vic Pro, which can be customized or comes with intel core 2 duo or quad, and the intel graphics chip 3100, similar to that in the new 13 inch macbook pros. The top end Vic Pro costs $1195. Sadly these are still not that good for modern games, except maybe minecraft, which may be playable with basic settings, but hey, that’s good enough for the griggers right? xbox is where the real games are had, or the snes hey benny?

Well what are you waiting for head on over to http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_Home.aspx to order yours now. Or wait and see what the amiga line up is.

Aminal Team plays Streets of Rage remix

streets of rage remake title screenWhat used to be a day for Aminal to play some guitar, and write a little music, soon turned into a day where Super Street Fighter IV was played with our Tournament Edition Arcade Fight Sticks. And thus the birth of a new challenge begun, what games can we play with these new bad boys. The Answer? other than an impromptu Crazy Taxi session, Streets of Rage Remix that’s what.

Well we played it griggers, unfortunately there were some technical difficulties here in the grig offices so we can’t show you, maybe next week, when you’ve moved on and seen it all before. But this week we bring you our first impressions of the remix, plus some game play footage of the XBOX Arcade version of Streets of Rage 2, something that was originally planned for last week, but it turned out that Dibbs purchase wasn’t allowed to play the full game on my xbox, even though he was signed in. Buhr.
######update######
The download link was taken down, and the thread over at http://www.bombergames.net/forum was locked to stop discussions about it. who knows whats going on?

So the remix, it looked just like a good ol’ Megadrive title, except running at a higher framerate, and on Windows PC, unfortunately FRAPS wasnt able to record from it, but i eventually got the snipping tool out to grab some screen shots.

blaze beating on the enemy

blaze fireballs the enemy

The music captures the essence of back in the day with some humdinger tunes, which can also be accessed in the options, just select a BGM to listen to while you work on your final year projects or something. (that’s right, that’s what i should be doing right now).

You know what, Dibbs Ahoy knows more about Streets of rage than me, let’s see if he wants to add to the article.

Dibbs Ahoy: Challenge accepted! Ooh, it’s a bit like the individual comments that they used to have in Mean Machines reviews – me like! Well, I gotta say I enjoyed what we played so far. The gameplay was slick, flowing and the whole thing had a solid feel about it managing to avoid the cheap feel that a lot of fan made projects sometimes have where it seems like it’s gonna crash at any second. The levels we played were familiar, yet refreshingly different, featuring alternate stage routes and interesting additional touches (sniper dude, leave me be you swine!). The hat tipping to other genre great Final Fight was also a nice touch as we took out thugs on a subway ride that must’ve been being pulled by the train from Back to the Future 3, as it seemed to just make the years roll back to a time when all was right in the world. And I’ve gotta say, the soundtrack is awesome! The remixes and presumably original tracks hit that nostalgic nail right on the head and is beyond what I could have hoped for had Streets of Rage 4 ever become a reality – outside of the lame looking tech demos that are on Youtube. Or Fighting Force. Anyhoo, not one to want to speak on someone else’s behalf, but surely Yuzo Koshiro would be proud! All in all, I’m looking forward to my next sitting with this badboy! Just gotta to remember to run and jump on that pesky train roof level. Run and jump darn it. Run and jump…

Dark Side of the Groon

Welcome one and all (or more likely, Lartens and Bedgell), and buckle up as we go on a journey through time, for you join us on a retrospective jaunt of epic proportions! We come here today with a sense of anticipation, counting down the minutes until 8am on 12/4/11 when the media-restraining embargo regarding information on the happenings in the world of Street Fighter will be lifted! Woo hoo! But what has lead us to this moment, I don’t hear you cry? Well Mr.Nobody-who’s interested, all will be revealed shortly.

street fighter logo

Capcoms annual Captivate event is just gearing up in Miami where they’ve promised great things – specifically Street fighter X Tekken info according to Street Fighter producer and self confessed community troll, Ono. Apparently we can expect another look at the game and fresh new info on this highly anticipated title. However, SF X Tekken is not my boggle. I mean don’t get me wrong – I’m gonna get that sucker, but my mind is on more immediate issues. And by that, I mean Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition finally coming to home consoles. The Blanka toy wielding wind up merchant has basically spent the last six months getting up to his usual trolling antics, messing with the fans and not really shedding any light on what’s really going on, instead laughing when asked questions about it and tweeting vague photos of… well, nothing really.

But the usual sources have been at work digging and prying in order to get behind enemy lines and start to figure the mystery out, and from that, some pieces of the puzzle have been unearthed, though it’s still a muddle to put together. But one thing is for sure – by this time next week, the murky waters will be a whole lot clearer! But for now alas, Captivate is where it’s all happening, meaning that the real info is for the exclusive delectation of those privileged gamesmiths and pesky journos deemed worthy by Capcom. Maybe next year, eh Griggers?

Anyhoo, in preparing ourselves for this reveal, we look back at the various clues and leaks that have crept out over the past several months as we don our finest Columbo style trench coat while lighting the fattest cigar that we can find before nailing the whole darn thing by going ‘Oh just one last thing, it’s probably nothing…’.

You know how it goes. Textbook.

Okay so here’s what we want: SSFIV AE on console with at least 6 additional characters on top of the 4 new(ish) ones we already know about. More game modes. More stages. Budget release a la SSFIV since this is the third console version.

Here’s what we’ll probably get: SSFIV AE. Literally just the Arcade Edition to crush our dreams. Full price. No fan requested characters, although we might get the dolls as DLC two years after they send an unlock code for them to one Dutch arcade who don’t even have the machine. Ono tweets a picture of a cooker with Blanka in the corner. He laughs. We speculate.

But I live in hope! Or at least, I live. Just. And until Capcom let me down, I’m gonna keep dreaming! So okay, what we got to go on here? Let’s have a look!

The Clues

Mystery Dhalsim Pic – The mischievous Ono tweeted this one out a long time ago now, well before AE launched in Japan. It shows Dhalsim torching an unknown opponent. The speculation on this one was rampant as nobody could quite confirm if it was someone already in the game or not. And people tried. Hard. Some even recreated the pic with all the characters in the game, but it all came to nowt, and Ono still hasn’t fessed up to who this flaming foe is. For every ‘It’s just Chun!’, there were ten proclamations of ‘It’s Gill’, and even more ‘ALEX you fools!’.

Leaked Achievement List – Before we even knew about Oni and Evil Ryu, an achievement list leaked containing icons featuring the two characters. Totalling up to the standard 200g in ‘chievmo’s, this had DLC written all over it. For those that considered the list to be real, the backlash was immediate – no one had asked for either of these two and cries of ‘wasted slots!’ were plastered all over SRK and Eventhubs. And for all of those people who cried Photoshop, they were made to think twice about their allegation when a couple of days later…

Confirmation of Oni and Evil Ryu – Capcom release a new AE trailer. No big deal, just the standard fighting fare. But wait a minute. Wait a dog-gone minute! What was that? Near the end! Why it’s only artwork for Evil Ryu and Oni Akuma! The characters in the leaked list were accurate, and before Capcom had officially shown them themselves. Again the message boards lit up, people hoping that they may be just boss characters. But as time (and a leaked unlock code) proved, they were in as playable characters, for better or for worse.

Leaks About Dates Ahoy – Around Christmas, rumoured leaks were starting to point to a few likely dates on which we could expect some action, with some kind of announcement in April followed by a June release being the most hotly touted. People asked ‘why so long?’, the response being that Capcom would have given arcades enough time to recoup AE machine investment. But a hungry gamer careth not for such nonsense! Alas, it’s again the gamers who get the short end of the stick as Capcom forced us to look on as they waste their time by continuing to flog the dead horse that is the arcade scene resulting in about only 2% of the community being able to play it. It’s almost the ultimate troll – as arcades shut down world wide, Capcom release an arcade only game. Brilliant. But I digress! All in all, this leak is looking accurate!

Oni and Evil Ryu unlock codes leak – Not really anything to do with pin pointing what we can expect any more since everybody knows about these two, but it was definitely a significant moment in SSFIV AE history! It was a late night in cold old Blighty when I received a tweet from SRK linking to a fuzzy video of these two characters in the hands of arcade goers. I watched. More and more videos came. I watched them too. To be honest, I don’t care about these two. I didn’t care when they were first shown, and I don’t care now. Capcom asked arcade owners to relock the characters and threatened action against people uploading videos. But it was too late – the cat was out of the bag and everyone had seen it. Evil Ryu was officially unveiled a couple of weeks ago. Oni this Friday. Meh. To be honest, I’m more annoyed that Capcoms plan was to show pictures of two characters and then wait about five months to do anything about it. They can shove plans like that, I tell thee! And so AE finally has Evil Ryu and Oni officially. But it’s the hope of other new characters that has people hyped!

Rumoured 8 Additional Characters – This one’s been kicking around for a while now, months in fact. This kind of sounds like more than I could possibly hope for, and I would be very surprised if this came to pass given what appears to be the lazy creation of the four AE exclusive characters (Evil Ryu = Ryu/Akuma, Oni = Akuma/Gouken with Blanka’s head, Yun and Yang = 1 character model with different heads). However, they’ve had a significant amount of time since AE launched now so who knows what could be coming. And coming they may be! Check out the pic taken from Capcoms Japanese site! Add Oni to the right, and we got ourselves some free character slots! Come on Capcom! And while I acknowledge that isn’t how the current AE character select screen looks, it’s certainly a way it could be re-jigged!

Korean AE listings – The Korean Games Rating Board is not usually the source of much SF news, but this one was a hum-dinger! Two listings showed up for SSFIV AE. What exactly were they? We’re still not sure. Usually two listings show up when there’s a multi-plat release of the same game, the most obvious being a PS3 and Xbox 360 release. But with SSFIV AE also thought to be announced for the PC at Captivate or a potential proper arcade machine launch, speculation was rife!

BBFC Listings – This was perhaps the most revealing of discoveries, as only last week news broke that the BBFC had a listing for SSFIV AE releasing on June 24th 2011 in the UK for Xbox and PS3. The certificate details around 6 minutes of new anime footage which should account for intros and endings for the 4 AE exclusive characters. As discussed on the forums, the BBFC allegedly only assess physical releases (I have no idea if that’s true or not – I don’t care enough to look it up with an announcement so close) which points to a disk based release, although it doesn’t rule out DLC as well, much as Red Dead’s Undead Nightmare also came in both flavours. Ono in fact tweeted just the other day that he is aware of the opinion people have wanting not to have to buy yet another disk. Not that basing opinions on anything he says is much of a good idea with his messing! However, the discovery of this certificate is bitter-sweet as this implies that the 4 new characters will be all that we can expect from this game as 6 minutes isn’t much at all for the inclusion of more. Sigh! But they haven’t broken me down yet! No matter how black and white this is looking!

The Conclusion

Well, that’s the bulk of what’s been going on leading into this weeks Captivate. If I was to put all my cards down on the table, I would have to say that it looks like a disk based release is a certainty, and the leaked achievement list and the fact that Ono has at least acknowledged people want the choice, points to a DLC option. However, I fear that with Capcoms new DLC character philosophy to milk us dry, we will literally get AE and nothing more at first. This would fall in line with the BBFC revelation detailing such a short time for new anime cut scenes. However, I do believe that new characters are on their way – the community has cried too loud and for too long for Capcom to just ignore everyone. I fully expect Karin, Elena, Alex and Rolento at the very least. My concern is that these characters will come in the form of individual DLC much like they’re doing with MvC3. With Mortal Kombat also adopting this model, it unfortunately seems to be the future of fighting games. But lets not be negative, I’ll be doing that next time I get the chance to talk about EA – the point here is that there is hope, particularly given the empty slots on the character select screen image.

So what do you think? Am I talking out of my ayne – and by that, I use phonicular method to divide and portray the word ‘anus’. Are Capcom preparing a video gaming feast fit for a king, or are they just laughing mercilessly as we follow information breadcrumbs Hansel and Gretel-style as we try to escape Capcoms lair while they merrily stir the diarrhoea cauldron and hope that we all jump in? Only time, and a week of bricking it over the thought that all they would have to do is change Cammy’s head to make the dolls, will tell.

Mojang win March Mayhem 2011 the Developers Showdown

escapist magazines march mayhem winners posterOver at http://www.escapistmagazone.com they seem to have an annual contest by which you, the voters, vote for game developers in a series of rounds. This takes place during the majority of March and ends in April. Last year another favourite game developer Valve clinched it, this year however, the wild card of the bunch and initially seeded 16, Mojang takes the glory, who are the inspirational indie game Dev’s that are still bringing us Minecraft as they make it. Which explains notch’s tweet yesterday where he jokingly says “My lawyers are telling me to be more humble, but I can’t hear them over how Sheen I am. (yes, that’s a thing now. Being Sheen)”. From what i’ve read of Markus Persson(notch), he really does seem to be a genuinely nice guy, and i am really looking forward to the documentary about him and Mojang by http://www.2playerproductions.com/. For more on March Mayhem Showdown check out http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108968-March-Mayhem-2011-Is-Over-Mojang-Wins for the full story. Go Mojang, Hurruh 🙂
