PSN still down! Want to play games with your friends? FairGame say go to their store and play chess?

Well griggers and griggeritas, its day 3 of playstation network outages, normally it wouldn’t bother me as i never use my ps3, and i’m not even using MY ps3 to link portal 2 to my steam account anyway because i don’t want to update the firmware. But today Portal 2 finall arrived, it doesn’t matter that i don’t have time to play it, i want it linked NOW.

If sony want to stop getting hacked maybe they should put otherOS back on ps3, coz that clearly agrevated some people, geo hotz was fighting for it i believe, but in the end accepted a slap on the wrist and moved on his merry way. Geo hots was one of the main dudes to get the ps3’s master keey to unlock the console. Anyway it would be great to get otherOS back on but with propper access to the processors, maybe then it can run minecraft, eh, now that wouldn’t be bad.

Anyway, if you actually use your ps3 other than a blu ray player, and are acustomed to playing games with your friends online, fret not, FairGame has a solution, whip on down to their store and play some board games, there’s even a sale on overstocked chess games apparently. saw this nippet of marketting on the tweets in googles realtime mode “psn network down”. You gotta give them credit for sugestion atleast :). The FairGame blog post is right herehttp://fairgamestore.com/2011/04/psn-network-down-agast/. Enjoy your weekend people

Christ May Be Risen – But SEGA’s Prices Aren’t!

20110421-094850.jpg

SEGA are on the charm offensive, revealing today that they’ll be celebrating Easter by slashing the prices of all their XBOX Live Arcade games. Hurrah!

The sale will run from April 22 – 25, and covers gems like Gunstar Heroes and Crazy Taxi, as well as all the Sonics. And don’t forget Out Run because the rumour is that it’s gonna be pulled from sale later this year. The full price list is after the jump – and we’d recommend snapping them all up as, despite anything you might say about SEGA today, these are some gems.

A-biv-biv-biv! It’s the Sonic Generations Game!

I sense the forces of Karma at work in the forthcoming release of Sonic Generations, Sega’s next-gen homage to the blue hog’s first 20 years. And it should give everyone hope – except that little shiz Geoffrey Lawrence.

See, when Generations hits the Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year, it will indeed be a generation since the truly defining moment in Sonic history – when my beautiful Japanese import of the Game Gear outing (with it’s awes-tastic 17.5% of extra speed!) disappeared into the black hole of aforementioned gimp-boy’s pocket. And the link?

Well, karma-conspiracy-fans, the plot for Sonic’s next instalment only frickin’ sees him sucked through a time-hole to join forces with classic Sonic against a “mystery enemy”. Who else could that BE?! This is CLEARLY some kind of karmic retribution where that punk Lawrence finally gets the comeuppance he avoided back in the day! 1991’s gonna getcha Geoffrey! Wait, what?! What do you MEAN this sounds more like hopeful, gibbering froth than a plausible rationale for new game development?

Let me tell ya, thats how things work! Because after the drivel Sega have pumped into this franchise in recent years, this kind of crazed thinking seems to be all they have to go on. And yet, this time, I’m feeling different about things. Feeling the spark. Feeling, maybe, there’ll be some karma-based redemption. And here’s why:

See, you can pretty much draw a half-way point down the franchise, and the last 20 years, at the Dreamcast’s Sonic Adventure. Sure, while Sonic 2 was undoubtedly the real peak, up to ’99 it was still going ok for the hog – and, crucially, his creators. But when the DC and Sega began to stumble in the first part of the noughties, it ushered in a decade of letdowns and buh that, with a keen sense of ying and yang, has struck an unerring balance against the glories of the 90’s. So you see, the cosmic forces are aligned at a tipping point – whatever happens, the balance has now got to shift one way or the other and this could be the game that does it.

Crumbs.

So what are Sega doing to ensure that eternal salvation swings their way? Strategy number one is ensure Generations is rooted in the classic – the old-style Sonic, original levels, 2D-scrolling and the simple delights of Spin Attack and Spin Dash, all make a welcome return. Tasty shiznit, nostalgia-fans – how I’ve missed Green Hill Zone! – but what’s new?

Well spank my thigh if we haven’t got ya a cheeky trailer to show just that. And what you’re seeing is that all the levels are spanked out in lushnuts 3D and HD too – modern Sonic taking the reins here with his Homing Attack and Sonic Boost manoeuvres. And for added fun, other characters and hidden treasures will be revealed throughout the game. Lordy, what an absolute hog-based jizzfest! Who could possibly want more?

Hmmm. Well. All this does kind of sound like the spiel that Sega rolled out for, oh-oh,Sonic 4. Not that you’d think that was a worry listening to David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era,” he says, with a surprisingly straight face.

Inspiring. In that it inspires me to buy something else. But you know what? Despite the despair-inducing concept that Sonic even has a Global Brand Director called David – despite the unbelievably high odds of complete, joy-shattering failure that all of this presents – I’m keeping the faith. This is SEGA’s Rocky moment – the fightback, the implausible return from the ropes. And if the dwarf-man Balboa can return, despite multiple poundings, and despite knowing his only reward for battling through them all is to gaze through the blood-smeared haze of his shattered irises at the unholy visage of Adriaaaaaaaan, then so can little old Sega.

And I mean it. Whatever happens, whatever appalling reviews this illicit spawn of once-great lineage may attract, I make a promise – I’m gonna buy it in an act of blind faith.

So, Sega, don’t let me down. Your eternal fate, and my hard earned pennies, are depending on you.

Portal 2 release early!!! The biggest hype of 2011 and us griggers are missing out

POrtal 2 release new on steam
For all those lucky folks who pre ordered the steam version, hell, pre downloaded the steam version portal 2, Christmas has come early, eight months early! you lucky dog, portal 2 is released, the GLaDS@home computations ran up some impressive potato sack indie sales to help boot up GLaDOS for the early release some when last night, though it appeared that the auxillary power count down helped boost it some what, but a majority of the games had reached their target mid day yesterday, which is great, valve are awesome, the games in the potato sack were generously discounted, Amnesia – The Dark Descent was half price at £6.50, i only wish i hadn’t purcahsedit a month ago.

Still this tale of early release is a sad one here at the grig, for only one of us has steam, and i pre orderd on the playstation so that i may actually play the machine, though as i’m linking it to my steam account to get the steam version for free, then i doubt it. Early shmirly. Truth is though i have way too much work to do for my final year project due in 9 days, no time for portals anyway 🙁

Apple Invents Square – Refuses To Share

20110419-080114.jpg

What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to sue the ass out of each other over patent infringement.

Yep, Apple has tossed another sticky package into the general bukakke of corporate America by suing Samsung for “slavishly” ripping off the iPhone and iPad design features with its Galaxy tablet. It’s nothing to do with the software or the apps or, you know, anything of substance (Galaxy uses Android, remember). Nope, Apple says the Samsung portable – probably their only real competitor at this point – has ripped off features like having curved edges, slim buttons and, oh-oh, the look of its screen icons.

Um, the little squares? They ripped off your little squares? Really? What else were they meant to use – trapezoids? “This kind of blatant copying is wrong,” said Apple spokesperson Kristin Huguet. Before slapping down McDonald’s for doing “circular” burgers that she says were, you know, totally her idea.

The lawsuit claims that “when a Samsung Galaxy phone is used in public, there can be little doubt that it would be viewed as an Apple product based upon the design alone.” Er, does that design include the big logo slapped across the front – you know, the one that says “Samsung”?

This new shizz lands on the already soggy biscuit of Nokia vs Apple, and Apple vs HTC – a veritable spank-fest that has seen all the main competitors in this market sue and counter-sue one another for patent breaches over the last few years. While not entirely without substance, the point of most of the suits seems more to be about mudslinging and jockeying for position – and in a market worth billions it’s not surprising.

But Apple, you’ll notice the Galaxy isn’t packing a dodgy antenna, predictive text that changes every sodding word I type into the name of an obscure Russian poet, or an offensively restrictive software package that chokes free development (and my ability to download anything you haven’t pre-authorised – though that hasn’t actually stopped me yet, hehehe…) Maybe if these wonderful design features start cropping up elsewhere you’d have a case. But the wanky little squares? Come ON!!

Konami Show I’m Over The Silent Hill

20110418-074211.jpg

Silent Hill scares the bejesus outta me. Fog? Monsters? Weirdass sirens going off all over the show? That’s enough for me. So I’m none too pleased at the news that Silent Hill: Downpour (number eight in the franchise) is creeping its heinous way to the next-gens in the Autumn. Even less happy to hear the composer behind TV’s psycho-serial Dexter is behind the in-game music. And positively bricking it at the concept that six brand-spankers new screens are poised just after the jump.

Luckily for anyone wanting to avoid the horrors of returning to Silent Hill, though, these are positively the worst promo screen shots I ever did see – making Silent Hill look about as petrifying as a brochure for the Lake District.

Konami would like us to know that the game’s about Murphy Pendleton, a convict who gets stranded in the fog when his prison transport crashes in the woods. But instead they shove us some pics of, erm, something that’s black (?!?!) and some random postman. The hell?! Even I’m not scared by these shots! (Well, maybe a bit of the postman. He looks like he wouldn’t take no buh off your postbox…)

So, has anyone seen any worse pics than these? Ping em to ben@grigorig.com and we’ll show Konami how it’s done…

Nyan Cat The Destroyer

2011 has taught us one thing so far: don’t get complacent or you’ll get bitten on the ass.

Those pootling along with dreams of nuclear safety awoke to nightmares in Fukushima. The early believers in a peaceful Arab Spring had their faith scorched in the Libyan desert. The hopeful, that saw redemption for humankind in Simon Cowell’s reported near-heart attack finally getting him off the telly, now have Michael McIntyre for two solid hours. Every week. In HD. FOREVER.

Let your guard down, people, and in rush the forces of evil.

And so it is when sodding games developers give us nothing to carp on about for a whole weekend. Lartens slips into a keyboard fantasy, Dibbs’ brain finally melts under the crushing betrayal of once great devs, and me? Well, I… I… All I can say is “Nyan cat. Meow, meow, meow…”

And if that’s not enough to twist the heinous arm of heartless games developers into giving us some goddamn content, I don’t know what is. Well, actually I do. Because there’s an hour long version of this beast on YouTube.

You have been warned.

Slow news day huh, but i found print screen on a macbook pro for win 7(bootcamp) woot!

printscreen of apples bootcamp commandsYeah folks it was genius, i searched google haha. The problem with the macbook pro is that f keys run out at 12, and print screen is something like 13 on regular keyboards. So where is the magic to make this happen? embarresingly my first stop was a forum where everybody said option f4, which equates to alt f4, which closes the active window in the Microsoft operating environment. So anyway i backed out, dissapointed a full page thread didn’t have the answer and there she was, apple support, worth a try i thought. BOOM! mac daddy ahoy hoy, it’s the freeeeaakin’ answer. fn shift f11. Simples :D. Now i don’t have to switch computers just to get printscreen, and before you ask, no i can’t use the snipping tool, i wanted to show pop up menus for a guide in the appendix of the project documentation. The apple support page is http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1220. Oh and to copy the current window to clipboard, i believe that is fn shift alt f11.

Now, if only there was a way the pause button will pause itunes when its not the active window……
