The GRiG goes Mortal Kombat Video Crazy

Truth is, over at GRiG Towers, Street Fighter has always ruled the 2D-fighter roost. More fluid, more imaginative, more addictive than its Mortal Kombat peers, the SF franchise has just always had the edge. Of course, we love a bit of blood and gore, and there’s definitely a healthier balance of psychos in bikinis in your average MK game – but that’s just never been enough to overcome the wooden and, well, stilted, gameplay.

So how are we feeling about the latest instalment, coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2011 from our good pals at NetherRealm?

Well, I’ll tell ya how we’re feeling. Somewhere in the expansive gulf between “meh” and “holy mama, that’s a whole new 2D-fighting engine right there with the return of the gore, up to four player tag team, co-op arcade mode and the return of all our favourite beauts from Liu Kang to Raiden”. You know, somewhere between those two. And in the back of our little griggy-minds, there’s the issue of PS3 owners getting a sneaky exclusive as Kratos enters the fray as a playable character for the first time, and the whole thing coming in lush Stereoscopic 3D. Admittedly, while Lovely for Lartens (PS3), that blows hard for Benny (Xbox). Dibbs I’m guessing is pretty set either way. The punkass.

And you? How can you decide whether to stay calm or get pant-wettingly excited? Whether to shake your head disconsolately and walk slowly away from your Xbox, shuffling into a distant sunset with a salty tear falling from your disappointed face, or laugh giddily at the sheer wonder of a new fighter being launch into your grubby mitts in under a month? Well, watch these vids! There’s been a shed-load recently, so us wonderful folk at the Grig have smashed em all together into one lovely little package. God, we treat you well.

Enjoy – and then let us know what you think. Not quite the all-powerful MvC3 trailers are they? But then, those bikinis… yarp yarp!

Mad Scientist Starts “End Of World” Ball Rolling

OK, you’re a mad scientist, buy you still have a choice: Create a bio-mass fuel cell that allows robots to chuck us in a blender and power their ascent to global dominance by munching on our poor innocent bodies in an horrific realisation of all our worst sci-fi fears.

Or, y’know, don’t?!

Wait, what’s that? You already have? Why, you crazy sonofa…! What do you mean it’s ok because it’s only a clock that feeds on flies and therefore not a substantive threat to humankind?! THIS IS HOW IT STARTS PEOPLE!

Because yes, all your Neo-in-a-bathtub fears about being used as the slave-like double-A’s for a cyborg ascendancy took a step closer with the creation of this temporal nasty. All it takes is the evolution of an organically-aware cyber-conscious and bam! Those flies on the conveyor belt will be replaced by babies before you can say Matrix.

However, all that aside, this is pretty goddamn cool. Hehehe – see you in the tub, battery-fans…

Nintendo 3DS in Da House

We here at grigorig endevour to give you the newest of the new. So we bring you a couple of videos of the unboxing of the 3DS, and first impressions of street fighter in 3d. But if it was to be put into words, i would say the 3D in the 3DS depth filled and layered rather magically, and well worth the £185 i payed for it. Wait a minute, £185, that was the cheapest anywhere, sorry folks, my mom had a coupon at sainsburys, £12 off a £60 shop. Ordinarily its £197 until the 8th of April when it returns and levels out at £220, or atleast according to the sign that was there it does.

Anyway, the videos, we’ve got the unboxing by the dorky sounding me, some street fighter action, plus some tasty augmented reality clips after the continue, check it out ^_^
Unboxing…

More videos hiding after the continue….

Dead Island Screens Heat Up Debate

Dead Island fever continues to hot up a treat – but some early previewers are getting the cold sweats over the game’s direction.

These new screens give us at Grig Towers the chills – in that lush, 1/8th-of-an-orgasm-sneeze kinda way (especially Stockings up there with the pipe and that… Hummana!) But even we could get queasy if a game that’s been so lauded off the back of its awesome debut trailer turns out to be little more than an effective viral.

As we flagged from the start – don’t get too excited til you’ve played it. Sadly, those that have (well, those that have seen it in action at least) are thinking Dead Island‘s generic hack’n’slash and jaunty feel are at odds with the sweeping epic it’s been positioned to be. But who knows – Techland don’t have an extensive pedigree but they have shown their creative flair just in the way they’ve put the game out there. They’ve clearly got something – it’s worth the wait to find out what.

For now, apply a cold flannel and medicate twice-daily with this range of new screens. Dr. Grig will be along with his diagnosis shortly.

Sega America, rare swag on ebay proceeds to red cross charity

Sega america are putting up some seriously rare items on ebay in order to help raise money for the red cross in light of the tsunami/earthquake dissaster that hit japan nearly 2 weeks ago.

Items of exceptional note are the dreamcast hoodie, dreamcast console bag, one of a kind outrun art signed by yu suzuki and a load of Yakuza 4 rarities. There was also a Nights pillow case, but as this turns out to be journey of dreams, i think i’ll give this a miss. And the Dreamcast hoodie is already at $338 with 6 days remaining, the bag is at $102.50. The ebay shop can be found at http://shop.ebay.com/segaamerica/m.html and here is the official video showing these bad boys off.

Tax credits for R & D in the games industry. Great

Now i have no idea about economics, politics and most things important to society, so when it says “tax credits” i have no idea what that means, but i know enough that something is better than nothing. This is the relevant part of the new Budget for game studios.

But when places like Canada get proper tax breaks, their industry grows 33%. When the coalition government came in the plans for proper tax reliefs were scrapped and this is the best we can get. Apparently the UK game industry has declined 9% over the last couple of years. Cheers for that, great, we’ve already seen Bizzare Creations go out of business just months ago. Bizzare most known for their Project Gotham series were one of the best home grown studios we have, along with Rockstar and the people who done burnout i think.

We need better tax breaks in our gaming industry when 2nd rate developers like trayarch break records for best selling video game of all time, even becoming one of the few media products to bring in over a billions dollars of revenue in such a short amount of time. Hello government, incourage the gaming industry over here please, there maybe some money in it.

Yes i pick on trayarch as 2nd rate purely because infinity ward who developed the first game in the franchise are clearly the better development team, and who also brought us the highly popular modern warfare versions of the same franchise. Sadly Infinity ward is now barely infinity ward as atleast 42 employees resigned after two of the main developers were fired based on “breaches of contract and insubordination”. There is now an ongoing legal battle between these developer/designers against activision. A sad tale as infinity ward clearly paved the way to success for the call of duty franchise from day 1, and Activision was originally setup to be the first third party publisher for games on home video game consoles like the atari 2600. The next stage of these legal preceedings are scheduled for may 23 2011.
