Old is New, and some of the New is just a guess

Ok, so we’ve got some old classics being re done for the xbla psn scene, two of which are saturn titles that are valueble on the bay, like Guardian Heroes and the japanese only release radient silvergun. There was also news a few days ago of a Double Dragon title rated by the German USK. The full title was Double Dragon II: Wanderer of the Dragons. Which could mean anything, even the NES version of Double Dragon 2 had extra levels and played different to other versions on other machines, the NES version being one of my favourite games ever, especially in the beat em up category. Though really there are a number of all time greats for me, maybe we should do a poll or something sometime on the grigorig sometime.

Oh, but the point of this post, yes. Activision has registered domains for variants on Goldeneye 007 Reloaded. Now 2010 saw the re imagined goldeneye on the wii, which was ok, actually i was enjoying it, not like mega but ok. It didnt do its purpose in hitting the nostalgia bone, which is kinda what i wanted, so maybe this new title will do that, and with any luck on xbla, i mean deathmatch on the classic levels even if not rendered in hidef will be a winner i’m sure, multiplayer on the wii was a bit iffy, but ok. But then that’s all the wii has been is ok. Nights Journey of Dreams on the wii missed the point entirely, never let the americans do a japanese game isthe moral of that story, oh and don’t release it on wii. I think i’m gonna stop there before i get in a tiz about NiGHTS into Dreams being re released only on ps2 japan. I mean i’m not sure there is an analogue controller that will work as well for it as the Saturn 3D controller, but atleast its out there on an internet leaderboard capable device. And that’s what counts, i was actually good at that game, and sega rally, port that baby please. Ok maybe a did rant a little there. Don’t forget July 5th is NiGHTS 15th birthday. That’s the original japanese release date of the game 15 years ago, my how time has gone by. Over at NiGHTSintoDreams.com TRiPPY and DiGi got an in the same room interview with Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka, the creators of NiGHTS. There is a brief write up, and an mp3 interview to download, check it.

Indie Game the Movie back on kickstarter

indie game movie adYou may remember a while ago that 2 people were making a documentary on Indie developers and games, there was a teaser featuring the 2 developers from team meat, the creators fo super meat boy. Well now it’s back on kickstarter to get funding for the polishing of stage, the post production mastering, audio, colour type technical stuff, apparently there’s already a rough cut of the documentary done. There is essentially 2 versions of the dvd, the main documentary with a few extras, and a special edition with a bit more crammed in. Both dvd pledges also gets you the digital distributed version too, which is handy as the special edition comes out later, they’re saying early 2012, whereas the regular should be the end of this year. So clearly for a gaming enthusiast with a bad indie game on xbox and another (bad) indie game in the works, the special edition is the only way to go. Though £46 for a dvd is a bit pricey, and i’m tempted by the tshort offer for another 23 dabloons, that’s the $110 kickstarter pledge. You’ll also get a special mention in the credits along with the other 1000 people. special. $5,000 though can get you executive producer title in the credits, cool huh? that £3,127 btw.

Don’t forget theres a documetary in the works focused on minecraft too, that will have to be had, i mean i’m addicted to the sucka, which incidently will be rolling out 1.7 soon, apparently thursday, maybe, but will be just the piston mod and a few bug fixes, 1.8 will see the adventure update and could be a long way off yet 🙁

Anyhoo, the kickstarter has 24 days left to run and has already recieved the goal of $35,000 and another 13k on top of that, what i’d really like to know is where to get it from and how much when it’s properly released, i mean if i find it on amazon for £20 bad boys i’ll be mighty unimpressed.

Sonic Generations playable demo available download now for 19 days

Today the 23rd of june see’s a playable demo of sonic generations, it’s the side scrolling level of green hill that’s available, no doubt to reinsure the fans that it’s better than sonic 4 episode 1, which it definately is, i very much enjoyed it that’s for sure, it also has options for sterioscopic 3D if you have the tv to support it.

Now i’m not the grig to ask on how true it plays to old school, that was dibbs core game of his youth. Here are my thoughts though, at first it looked cluttered and it goes by so fast that its hard to take notice of the nice backdrops, but after getting used to the level a bit, and adjusting my eyes to the speed it doesn’t feel cluttered anymore, and its very satisfying to time the jumps just right, though there were a couple of non understandable reasons why sonic slowed down and didn’t run off a ledge the way i expected, that was vvery anying, but trying for a speed run was satisfying, now its not a great time, but it’s only just come out on XBLA and PSN to play. The demo is limited to the 1 level and isn’t available of ever, it seems it will be locked out in 19 days, weather you already downlaoded it or not. Anyhoo, check out the gameplay vid

The Legend of Zelda ocarina of time 3d is amazing! Beautiful and so so sexy

ocarina of time 3ds cover artSomewhere in the late 80’s, me and my brother were in Boots (a retail outlet in Eastbourne), in the back corner there where some NES games amongst others, one of these NES games had a gold cartridge and a little square hole in teh cardboard sleve to see it, I had no idea what the game was about or if I’d like it, it was just unique and I had to have it, i was like 10 after all, i’m not sure where the money came from, maybe it was a birthday or something. Anyway, this game was Zelda II the Adventure of Link. And it was amazing, the depth of game play and the story arc were like none i had experience in my six years of gaming, talk to the old man in the town and get a new fighting action of stabbing down when you jump, use magic to jump higher and other abilities, incredible! Some years past and this time on the Super Nintendo comes Zelda: a link to the past, this version had all new fancy graphics thanks to the 16 bit machine and some might claim the best Zelda game of the lot, others will claim Ocarina of Time on the N64 for the top spot, it certainly was epic, with an incredible story and in a proper 3d world. Others have come since, 2 on the GameCube, named Windwaker and Twighlight Princes, plus more on the nds, not as fancy as its home console counterparts. Now the home console version of one of the greats is on a portable console, and it’s better than ever.

I wish you could witness the beautifuly touched up graphics, and the incredible depth the 3ds brings to this timeless classic. One of the best games ever has actually been made even better, for reals. Never mind that it’s a remake, it’s a remake that looks stunning, plays fantastic, and is portable too(well, for a few hours at least). In an attempt to capture the new look in 2d I’ve posted a video for your viewing pleasure, keep in mind that this is a camera trying to record the screen, trust me it looks sooo much better up close in person.

So what is my review?……..

After Navi gets sent to find you, we’re treated to a little joy ride from Navi’s perspective from  the Great Deku Tree to Link/your house. This time in stereoscopic 3D! All the little firefly looking specs help give a sense of the true dimensions rather than the flat interpretation of a 3d environment, the walls in the narrow passage way  type part show great depth, and don’t even get me started on how good the ledge looks at links house.

The first time you open that chest you’d wish every Zelda game had the magic 3D make over, turning back to 2d makes it look droll in comparison (from here on 3d refers to the stereoscopic output of the 3ds). As yet I haven’t seen anything pop out (like a fish I caught in the 3ds mini game thing) but rather the view is of depth into the 3ds, if that makes sense, to be honest I’ve only gotten as far as talking to Zelda in the castle so only done 1 dungeon so far, I’m a crack shot with the slingshot now by the way ^_^.

Speaking of the slingshot, did you know that it now makes use of the 3ds’ gyroscope and accelerometer, the nub thing can still control it but sometimes its quicker to move the 3ds itself in the direction of the target, pretty groovy huh. I thought so. This also works for the first person view. Not 3rd person view as most of the game is. Third person is a view to see better from a still position, the option for this is like many of the others in that it is on the bottom screen and accessible by touch, not necessarily the stylus, my thumb could get it. Other quick functions are “x” and “y” assignments for weapons such as slingshot, these can be used form the physical buttons as well as the touch screen, there are also 2 more assignments for items, I’ve got a Deku stick on my first one as it comes in handy for lighting torches etc. The game play touch screen has Gear, Map and Items menus to select for more in-depth view on each, plus a basic map is shown and a count of your rupees. Oh heart meter is also on this screen, ideal for making the main game play screen less cluttered to show off the beauty of the new detailed graphics.

I’ll mention graphics one last time lol, the water effects are really tasty in 3d, it really makes the game look 2011 not 1998 or 2005. A side note from the pretty graphics, I’ve noticed particularly when dusk is approaching near the castle that it has a similar feeling to the dusk scenes in Panzer Dragoon Saga, more so than Twighlight Princess, it’s rare for a game to achieve this type of graphical style that I find really appealing, I put it down to the resolution of the Sega Saturn, which it still could be I suppose, as the 3ds is only 240 pixels high, of course it’s on a much smaller screen, though I wouldn’t say no to a panzer Dragoon Saga Remake in 3D, you know what I’m saying, I mean radiant Silvergun and guardian heroes are being remade for Modern Consoles, why not the most expensive one of them all?

So in closing, if the 3DS was still £160 bones on Amazon I would say what are you waiting for. But as it’s gone back to £180 that makes the world of difference, but if there was a game that made the 3DS worthwhile I’d say this is it. The pinnacle of Zelda on the greatest platform it could be on. DO IT.

Kinect SDK Beta is here, and i’ve already played, short tutorial for basics

well it’s the eve of “zelda: ocarina of time” to be released on the 3ds, and Microsoft finally released the Kinect SDK beta, totally unrelated i know, but just to get the context of time here. GMT that is, as out US counterparts have to wait a few days later for zelda. Anyhoo, its Thursday the 16th of June and the SDK for kinect is finally available on windows. The research subdomain of Microsoft finally stopped its lies of an end of spring release and changed its pages to a download link and some live coverage of the release event. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/kinectsdk/

The kinect programming api works with either c++ or c# and visual studio has express versions of both of these for free, i think you just need to register to use them, being a student i’ve got the full visual studio ultimate installed so i won’t be going through that bit, but if you’re embarking on this journey then you should already know your way around an IDE.

my src code for my little app =here ya’ll

And the tutorial, if you can call it that, is after the continue reading..

Some of the examples that are available also need directX sdk and runtime installed. The little tutorial i’m about to go through also uses coding4fun libraries that need to be downloaded too, this made it simpler for the depth video, though you could just use the source code that comes in an example and is found at C:\Users\Public\Documents\Microsoft Research KinectSDK Samples\NUI\SkeletalViewer\ after you’ve installed the sdk. All of the kinect SDK needs .net 4 installed though and only windows 7 is supported.

There are some videos from the http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/KinectSDKQuickstarts/ which show the basics of what to do, i followed some of them and noted down some of the more core things, the first things to do are to download the sdk from http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/kinectsdk/download.aspx and the coding 4 fun library from http://c4fkinect.codeplex.com/ and if you havent the IDE then either the visual studio express for c# or c++, this little tut is in c#, grab them from http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/express

once installed, load up visual studio and create a c# project of type wpf application

In the solution explorer window go to references  right click add reference and in the .NET tab order by name by clicking name heading and find Microsoft.Research.Kinect and add it. To add the coding for fun library go to browse and fin where you unzipped the dll, choose the wpf one.
add reference in visual studioadd research kinect sdk reference
Next make sure the properties window is open
view -> properties window

click outside of the box in MainWindow.xaml if no properties are showing and the properties box should come up. Clicking in the window itself might refer to grid properties, we want window properties which is the outside part, grid or windows will be named in the top of the properties window. Now click events in the properties window, search “loaded” and double click “loaded” for the loaded event stub code to be added to the MainWindow.xaml.cs file. I assume this is like the code behind file in aspx web page development. Do the same for “Closed”. typically the signature looks like
private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
properties
loaded event
closed event

now the cs file is there add the using statements for kinect to the bottom of the using list, the list is at the top of the file.

using Microsoft.Research.Kinect.Nui;
using Microsoft.Research.Kinect.Audio;
using Coding4Fun.Kinect.Wpf;

Nui is Natural User Interface

Next create a runtime object, have it as a global variable but a new object created in MainWindow(),

Runtime nui;
public MainWindow()
{
nui = new Runtime();
InitializeComponent();
}

Then initialize it in theprivate void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) event with:  nui.Initialize(RuntimeOptions.UseColor | RuntimeOptions.UseDepth);

In the private void Window_Closed(object sender, EventArgs e) add: nui.Uninitialize(); this last statement stop the program from hanging when its closed

private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
nui.Initialize(RuntimeOptions.UseColor | RuntimeOptions.UseDepth);
}

Window_Closed((object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
nui.Uninitialize();
}

Great, add an image from the toolbox to the grid, the grid should be there by default, you’ll know the grid by the code view of the xaml file, the grid makes it easier to drag things around. make the image 320 x 240, copy and paste it to make another, to position them you may need to use the margin properties in the properties window.

I’ve also added buttons to move the camera up and down for now, apparently this shouldn’t be done often, no more than 15 times every 20 seconds, so don’t over do it lol. so, with a button selected go to the properties in the properties window and find content to rename the text within the button, i named mine up and the other down. genius i know, also with the button selected go to event and double click  “click” to add a click event in the code, it will give you a click event stub in the code (the cs file). you can also add click=”some_name_of_button_event” to the button code in the .xaml file the stub will generate its name from that. While we’re at it, lets add a text box, the code in the xaml should have a name for the textbox, something like textBox1. we can use this in the cs file.

Moving on, add some code to them clicks, just some thing simple like the following for the up button click event
if(nui.NuiCamera.ElevationAngle < 20)
nui.NuiCamera.ElevationAngle += 5;
textBox1.Text = nui.NuiCamera.ElevationAngle.ToString();

and for the down button click event
if(nui.NuiCamera.ElevationAngle >-20)
nui.NuiCamera.ElevationAngle -= 5;
textBox1.Text = nui.NuiCamera.ElevationAngle.ToString();

maybe also wrap them up in a try catch block, sometimes it gave errors (maybe that maximum amount of usage thing)

What the above does: it just tilts the kinect and then shows the value in the text box, 0 is level and it goes about 27 either way.

next on the window load event add a video event. Note after the += press tab tab, that should put the code in and create the event stub code
nui.VideoFrameReady += new EventHandler<ImageFrameReadyEventArgs>(nui_VideoFrameReady);
and then open the stream
nui.VideoStream.Open(ImageStreamType.Video, 2, ImageResolution.Resolution640x480, ImageType.Color);

in the void nui_VideoFrameReady(object sender, ImageFrameReadyEventArgs e) event that should of been created add the following where image1 is the image added to the window earlier (it may be a different name, look for the name of the image in xaml view)
PlanarImage image = e.ImageFrame.Image;
image1.Source = BitmapSource.Create(image.Width, image.Height, 96, 96, PixelFormats.Bgr32,
null, image.Bits, image.Width * image.BytesPerPixel);

That’s the video sorted, now for the depth, this uses the coding4fun library

in the window load mehtod add
nui.DepthFrameReady += new EventHandler<ImageFrameReadyEventArgs>(nui_DepthFrameReady);
nui.DepthStream.Open(ImageStreamType.Depth, 2, ImageResolution.Resolution320x240, ImageType.Depth);

and in void nui_DepthFrameReady(object sender, ImageFrameReadyEventArgs e) add
PlanarImage image = e.ImageFrame.Image;
image2.Source = e.ImageFrame.ToBitmapSource();

extra notes
stride one row of pixels in memory to the next. thats image width and padding.

C.A.O.S Sega Ad Tomfoolery Ahoy!

Hot news just in from Christmas ’93 now as we don our retrospective glasses of Grig once more, leaving behind all the modern day gaming-tomfoolery and letting it wallow in it’s quagmire of deserved woe! Prompted by a recent stumbling over both an original Sega ad and my drawn-from-memory adaptation of that very commercial, we have a closer look at these segments from a time long forgotten – and as once seen gracing the mighty pages of our old fanzine, CAOS magazine!

These items are practically relics from a bygone era when not only were Sega in some form of meaningful business, but it was also a time when three young amigo’s named Ben, Matt and Wayne pooled their creative resources into creating the aforementioned entertainment/videogame magazine, the like of which the world had never seen before! Mostly because it had a target readership of about 6 girls who neither cared about videogames, nor its writers – or in other words, us. But that wasn’t enough to deter our budding journalistic instincts, no siree!

Whilst the magazines humble beginnings were never meant to amount to anything other than fun (and making Wayne go to get us food – shop boy!), within a couple of issues the proverbial ploop was starting to hit the fan, and as time dragged on, it’s fair to say that the magazine had started to become a paper-based war zone as it’s various contributors started to turn against each other. It was soon recognised to be an act of war if a fellow writer drew characters or wrote articles that had any resemblance to anyone else on the non-existent payroll. It was probably around the time that each of our different magazine segments started to contain disclaimers stating that fellow writers were the carriers of the worst kind of sexual diseases known to man, that the wheezing magazine started to roll over and die a painful death. And as Wayne signed off in aggressive style with an unpublished 130-page assault on his soon to be former journalistic buddies, it was fair to say that the days of CAOS were numbered. But what a ride!

Techno and Grig
The Grig meets Techno, yesterday.

However, from the ashes of the battle, there were still a few rays of light that emanated from the gloom. Still a few shards of diamond in a hailstorm of woe (what the heck am I going on about?!). Still a few Imodium-infused solids in a sea of diarrhoea (Toilet humour? Fail). For every ten pages of insults, there was maybe one hilarious paragraph of class. For every ten mentions of someone having V.D, there was perhaps one quality joke. And for every tenth promise to Wayne that next time someone else would go to the shop, there was one comic strip of excellence that would transcend the years!

Alas, what I am posting below is not one of them, but hope you enjoyed the irrelevant history lesson!
Sega ad story board
Sega ad story board
Sega ad story board

What we have here are drawings by my 13 year-old self. Yes, they are rubbish – I actually remember the only reason I even made this at all was because I thought the Sega Pirate TV logo I did was ok and didn’t want to waste it, but I digress. Somehow my Sega-obsessed brain managed to capture almost an entire Sega advert despite only seeing it about two or three times at most. However, with the advent of modern computers and the bottomless pit of resources that is the Internet, I can now revisit that which I once could only ever view by the feeble power of my very own grey-matter! Hit that button to see how close my ad really was!

So there you have it. Naturally I doubt any of my fellow classmates of the era were spending their evenings whittling away the hours with such endeavours of awesomeness as this. They were probably all doing stupid real schoolwork or something. And while those very people and their likeminded kin may proclaim a youth misspent, or perhaps just call me another kid of the MTV generation with a head filled up with too much nonsense, I say pah! I spit at thee naysayer! Because if anyone fails to realise otherwise – to be this good takes ages. To be this good takes Sega!

This short tech demo of zelda deserves its own post

Although its not a playable game demo, it is apparently rendered in real time, basically it isn’t a CGI movie that’s been pre rendered in studio max and made into a movie on the wii u. it looks really nice and i hope this is the shape of things to come, it’s not implied this is the direction it will go. using the screen controller makes a nice additional interface for inventory too. though the controller is a little large, for a controller. Check the zelda wii u tech demo here http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2011-wii-u/715717 or below if the embed code is supported in your browser
