Puff the magic dragon, lives by the sea

Ender Dragon
I hope that title isn’t copyright infringing, anyhoo, i can no longer contain my excitement, i like dragons, they’re cool, there’s been some good movies with dragons “DragonHeart”, “how to train your dragon”, “Eragon”, and classic cartoons “Dungeons and Dragons” of course, “jane and the dragon” a cgi favourite, and video games have played host to them for many a year too, “Panzer Dragoon Saga” anyone? But now/soon, a dragon maybe coming to minecraft, @notch aka Markus Persson has been playing around with creating a dragon in minecraft, most the weekend he was tweeting new pics of his airborn dragon, at first he was grey, then sporting a myriad of technicolour, and now is finally seeing a more permanent skin and finalizing the model shape, i think the last tweak was the wing span. This dragon has been dubbed The Ender Dragon in one tweet where he says tomorrow he animates, this was 23 hours ago as of writing so that must have been today, hurrah. I have cheekily stolen the images and put up on the grig for easier perusal, sorry notch or imgur.com

In other minecraft news, the android version is supposedly out for modern devices running android 2.2, check it out. it’s also been previously stated that Mojang are going to stop adding features around the 18th october and focus on polishing the game a bit more for the official release in novemebr. @jeb_ has been working on a lot os spell and enchantment type crafts lately, very active on his twitter account, we expect to see these rolled out in 1.9, some are in the 1.9 pre release v3 already.

Ni No Kuni Spellbook, Subtitles and US Release Title Confirmed!

Ni NO Kuni
As November’s Japanese launch date looms ever closer, Ni No Kuni news is coming thick and fast – and most of it concerning the western release!

Firstly, there’s the name. Following GRiGORiG breaking the news that Level 5 had lodged a European trademark for the game, it’s now emerged that they’ve done the same in the USA – confirming the full title across the west will be Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. A great name and a bit easier on the tongue that the translated Japanese title (Queen of the White Holy Ash).

Then came the big news that all western fans want to know: localized versions will feature subtitles, rather than dubbed voiceovers, according to Argentinian games blog Loaded VG. For those at GRiG Manor, this is exactly what we wanted to hear – Ghibli, and Japanese anime generally, is an uncomfortable fit with English voices. There’s a charismatic Japanese charm that binds the language and the visuals, and that’s lost if you ditch the original audio – much better to have the subtitles, so good choice Level 5!

Next up, Manzai revelations about the spell book! Fans of the DS game will remember last year’s handheld version come packaged with a huge graphic novella in place of the instruction manual. Beautifully put together and containing helpful advice – and those all-important spells – it was a real USP for the original release and YouTube is still full of vids of enraptured fans leafing through their new purchase. However, in two new videos featuring Ni No Kuni’s standup comedy duo – previously seen rehearsing their routines in one of the game’s cut-scenes – Level 5 have revealed that there won’t be a hard copy of the spell book bundled with the PS3 version of the game. During their routine – which you can see below – the hilarious pair do reveal, however, that it will include a digital version – before quipping that this is just as good. Not sure that’s either clever, or funny, though it does make the mountains giggle. Sadly, in our opinion, this is a real let-down for PS3 fans who will have been waiting excitedly to get their hands on what is a real collector’s item. However, we’re willing to bet that a special edition will be released either at, or soon after launch, that will include the magic book – Level 5 would be crazy not to.

Following a hugely successful showing at TGS, and news of the North American release, Ni No Kuni has been getting huge amounts of attention on blogs and social media. The demand for a full localization is certainly growing, though there’s still no concrete news of a European release – something we’re hoping Level 5 will reveal at their expo later this month. You can help sway their hand by joining the Campaign for Localization – come on, you know you want to!

ROLLING STAAAART!

Hurrah for SEGA and their mind-boggling mysteries! Over at their blog, they’re running a competition to guess what retro title they’re about to announce for PS3 release – all you have to do is watch the vid and guess what they could POSSIBLY be driving at.

And by god if it isn’t blindingly obvious that their big secret is… DAYTONA! Hurrah!

Still, that would be bigger news if it was even the tiniest bit secret – and if the GRiG hadn’t already broken the story weeks ago that the classic driver would be getting a multiplatform release. But hey, quibbles aside – who’s gonna turn down the chance to hear a Japanese guy singing? Not me you fools!

Sing Japanese guy! SING!

Sdatcher Part 2 – Done Properly!

Happy news Sdatcher fans, as the second instalment of everyone’s favourite cyberpunk radiodrama is now available as a fully translated YouTube – just as the Lord God intended. And once more, the wonderful zajunker has done an ace job of capturing Hideo Kojima’s work.

The second instalment surprises from the off as the toilet-dwelling foe from Act 1 makes his intentions clear… We get our first taster of the mysterious Rug Hunt (raising hopes of scenes based in IKEA. “I’m looking for a mat. Ooh, this one’s nice…” etc) and there’s even a welcome cameo from everyone’s favourite Jackass prankster, Steevo (well, the high-pitched, Japanese docker version…)

Only two episodes in and Sdatcher is tense and brutal already – and the Boys of The PlayGrig Mansion are loving it. In fact, we’re so excited about the return to Neo Kobe that we simply can not go on living without a Snatcher sequel. So if you haven’t already joined our campaign, do so now and let’s tell Konami what a great idea it’d be.

PS Any sequel must include Katrina shower scenes. Just so we’re clear.

Ni No Kuni European Release Soon To Be Announced?

Ni No Kuni

European fans of Ni No Kuni flooded Twitter with excitable hashtags today as news began to filter through of a breakthrough in the campaign for full localization. Determined followers of the Level 5 / Studio Ghibli PS3-bound RPG have discovered that a trademark application has been filed in the EU for a property known as Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch – massively raising hopes the game will see a release outside of Japan and North America.

Ni No Kuni-love has exploded in recent weeks as trailers showcasing lush graphics and tantalising slices of a beautiful Ghibli world have flooded the web and, at last week’s Tokyo Game Show, there was only one title on everyone’s lips as gaming blogs the world over lined up to praise gameplay that seems successfully to fuse the modern and the classic.

Japan’s PS3 owners will get their hands on the game on November 17th and, earlier this month, Level 5 sent their western fans into rapture by announcing that there would be a North American / english-language release sometime in 2012. However, European gamers were left with the frustrating prospect of seeking an import as there was no news of full localization. The gloom was only compounded by the fact that Level 5 have established offices in Japan and, as of this year, in the USA, but no presence or distribution network in the EU. They’ve previously relied on Nintendo and Sony to release their titles – a possibility with Ni No Kuni, but not ideal.

However, today’s news gives firm evidence that Level 5 are considering a wider release. The application – for a Community Trademark – is an essential first step in protecting their IP should they seek to launch over here, and has been submitted by Reddie and Grose, IP specialists with expertise in bringing Japanese products to the EU. Only registered on September 22nd, the file is still under review by the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (the EU’s office for trademarks and design) so a formal announcement may be delayed until it’s confirmed.

In the meantime, get your sweet ass over to the Campaign For Ni No Kuni Localization and make sure Level 5 know how much you want the release – because now, more than ever, it looks like we just might get it!

That glorious application in full:

Dead Island Movie On The Way in 2013

Dead Island

The Dead Island hype machine rumbles on with the news today that Lionsgate, the successful TV and film developer behind hits such as Mad Men and Kick Ass, has optioned the movie rights. The planned “human emotion” based zombie flick is already in early development and scheduled for a 2013 release.

Despite the lukewarm reviews for the game itself, Dead Island continues to live off the huge success of its teaser trailer – a wonderful bit of marketing that pitched the IP as a taut emotional saga, rather than the hack’n’slash romp it turned out to be. While the game has been successful, it’s the marketing that has been the true story – featuring in Adweek‘s list of the year’s best commercials, and picking up the Golden Lion at the Cannes International Festival of Creativity, the advertising industry’s highest honor. From the hype it generated, Dead Island has managed to shift over 2 million units since its launch earlier this month, pushing it to the top of the US and UK charts. And Lionsgate are making no secret that they’ve bought the IP off the back of the trailer rather than the game.

“Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck.” Lionsgate co-COO Joe Drake told grigorig.com. “This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”

Truth is, while this may seem a huge gamble to take off the back of a new franchise with only a few minutes of quality CGI giving it value, if Lionsgate make a film as good as the trailer they’ll have a hit on their hands. And even if they paid a shedload for what is, essentially, just the brand recognition rather than an exciting concept, it’s still a banker. Buying into an IP with one of the most successful marketing campaigns under its belt is always a savvy play. And besides, as recent box office figures have shown, if you chuck enough hype at something then it’s a guaranteed hit. Something that Deep Silver, the producers behind the ultimately middling Dead Island game, know all too well.

Supermodel3 is the sexiest super model of them all

It’s been promised for the majority of this year, but now it has finally happened, the model 3 board emulator supermodel 3 has sound, not only that, but it accepts a range of peripheral devices for input too. Xbox controllers are a go, unfortunately i still couldn’t complete the 2nd track, doh! so the keyboard controls weren’t to blame, nether the less, i’m far more confortable with a controller, though it does open up the possibility for a steering wheel and pedals solution to enter the fray, obviously i tried out Daytona 2 on it, which still run pretty good, a little slow down under the boat and a couple of other places but mostly good, though the sound quality wasn’t great, at least its there for feedback and some semblance of a tune.

The official site for supermodel 3 has been moved from trzy.org to http://www.supermodel3.com/ in honour of its 2.0a release. You will find downloads for windows 32/64 bit programs, and the src code which you can compile for windows, mac (intel) and linux if you know how, i can’t remember the exact steps for mac, but it required installing some dependency libraries like sdl and zlib, sdl you can download the dmg and unpack the sdl framework to your macs Library/Frameworks folder, the readme explains this, the zlib moving the make file for the target OS and renaming it simply makefile in the root directory, the one with the src folder in it, and using the terminal to go to the location and typing makefile. after it has compiled the supermodel file to run should be in the bin directory, copy paste it into the root so you can save the config file, leaving it in the root causes an error becuase of the config file path, though alternatively you could put the config folder in the bin instead i guess. anyway, if the supermodel file is in the root where your terminal should already be anyway you run ./supermodel -config-inputs to configure inputs, with the emu window as the active window you press enter then the key you want to assign for the control, to skip any controls just press down, to go back up press up, once you have the ones you want then just keep pressing down to skip the other peripherals. just running ./supermodel should give you a list of the parametrs you can use for it

To get a game started, i generally run “./supermodel dayto2pe.zip -show-fps -res=700, 904” without the quotes. If like me you started with coin 1 as number 1 when doing your control config, and worked you way along, that means 7 should be inputTestA, this is important to know for some service menus on daytona, then use 5 or 6 to move down the list and 7 again to select game assignments, then cabinet type single. That should be that set up.

Bare in mind that i found osx to perform less than the windows version.

###update###
There’s actually a download for the osx version now, you don’t have to compile the src after all, hurrah

PS And Here’s Act 2…

Snatcher

In case you can’t wait to see what happens to Jean-Jack after his encounter with the man in the toilet… Here’s a translation of Act 2 of Sdatcher! Sadly, it’s not yet in the wonderful subtitled movie style that zajunker did for Act 1, but if you can’t wait for your robo-fix, then get reading!

Sdatcher Gets Translation – Spelling Not Improved

The only way to truly express our longing for a new Snatcher game is to listen to Tina Turner’s Thunderdome on repeat, whispering the words “Snatcher 2” over the chorus and fingering through old promo pics for Blade Runner. Nothing else comes close to the creepy, passionate fandom of those touched by Konami’s legend. So the news that Snatcher‘s eclectic creator Hideo Kojima has finally returned to the world of Neo Kobe for a follow-up to his 1988 classic made us positively soil ourselves with futuristic glee. But does Sdatcher, an all-new radio drama written and produced by Kojima, satisfy our massive robo-hunger? Or is this just a Gillian Seed-sized amuse-bouche that merely whets our appetite for more?

It’s been 17 years since the Mega CD version of Snatcher burst into our lives, replete with Gillian Seed’s robo-smut and more bioroids than you could shake your Philip K. Dick at, and in all that time we’ve been waiting, hoping – nay longing – for Hideo Kojima to see sense and bring us another instalment of his cyberpunk adventures. (We’re ignoring the MSX2’s SD Snatcher as, firstly, we haven’t got this console and, secondly, it doesn’t have a great deal to do with the graphic novel-style japery of our beloved original. RobinThough there was that wonderful moment when Robin the Medic-droid tried to flog you some dope. But we digress…)

So, there’s good reason to be elated about Sdatcher – Kojima is returning to his dystopian masterpiece, and launching a whole new tale with help from the original team. Akira Yamaoka, the ledge behind the Snatcher soundtrack – as well as Silent Hill‘s eerie atmospherics – has done a new futuristic score; Shuyo Murata is in the director’s chair, as he was for much of the Metal Gear series including the audio drama version; and the vocal talent includes Akio Otsuka, best known as Solid Snake (oh, and Seth from SSFIV). Sounds fantastic, right?

Except: it’s NOT A GAME. It’s a radio drama. And it’s in Japanese.

Doh.

But wait – there’s good news! For the wonderkids at zajunker have done us an English translation. And it turns out that Sdatcher is pretty freakin’ awesome! Episode 1, above, introduces us to our hero, Jean-Jack Gibson – a grizzled 50-something in a sharp suit and trenchcoat (sound familiar?) – who’s reeling from the disappearance of his wife, Alice, and up to his eyes in the filthy mire of Neo Kobe’s underground. Right from the off, Gibson is flirting with Lisa Nielsen, Kobe’s former chief prostitute who’s swapped her life of steamy liaisons for steaming mugs of chow, and who we meet serving Jean-Jack a coffee and a come-on… There’s even a little Metal Gear-style sidekick in the form of Little John, Gibson’s metallic-intel buddy who earns his stripes right at the get-go by intercepting a nefarious villain…

So, basically, everything a Snatcher fan could want. Except, well, the ability to join in. Bottom line – this is an ace side project, and we’re certainly happy for another slice of Neo Kobe, but we can’t be satisfied until Kojima is back at the programming desk knocking out a proper game. That’s why we’ve launched the Campaign For A Snatcher Sequel – so if you also want a next-gen update of this ultimate classic, come and join the cause!

Pre releasing the pre-release, Minecraft’s new distribution model, or so it seems, lol

non player character screenshot minecraft
Hey there Minecraft fans, it may interest you to know that minecraft has been going through a phase of late where the new updates are first pre released to the hardcore fans before being added to the automatic download. What this essentially is, is the minecraft.jar file of the latest build but labeled pre release, which either Jeb or Notch host on the officail minecraft.net site and then tweet the url for fans that can’t wait for the official update. all you have to do is find where minecraft stores the files on your system and replace said jar file and you can run the early pre release, if there are any major catastrophic bugs found, then let the team know before they release the update for reals.

At first it seemed to be that the pre release build of 1.8 was leaked, and then notch said he didn’t mind but make sure you get it from their url, i don’t know why they had it hosted int he first place, i speculate that their are beta testers of the beta or something like that, but now both jeb and notch openly let the fans try it out. 1.9 has a pre release out, see @jebs_ tweet for the link http://twitter.com/jeb_/statuses/116880362793222144.

instructions after the break

The minecraft launcher should tell you where the files are and even link to them if you go to options before you log in (the link only worked in windows for me though), if you need to go there manually, Windows users and lion users may find that part of the file path has a hidden folder, in order to get to the minecraft directory you will need to show these hidden files.
Windows users should go to the menu in the window explorer (if you don’t have a menu then press alt should show it) then select Tools->Folder Options ->view and select the check box for show hidden files, folders and drives.
Lion users will need to open a terminal from Applications/Utilities and type “chflags nohidden ~/Library/” without the quotes to show the library in you home directory, “~/” is the Home or <yourname> part. now everythings visible, the location will typically be in:
Windows users will find the files in Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft
Mac users will find the files in Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/minecraft
I advise that you make a backup of the minecraft folder somewhere, put it in your documents and and name it of the back up current version.

Next up in the minecraft folder, then bin you’ll find minecraft.jar, or just minecraft with the file extension hidden, but the details will say Executable Jar file, replace it with the minecraft.jar you just downloaded from minecraft.net and run your game from the regular launcher. You may find that you want to turn the hidden files back to being hidden, windows user go back to the settings and select Don’t show hidden files and folders, Lion users should go back to the terminal and change nohidden to hidden “chflags hidden ~/Library/”.

As of this writing the 1.9 pre release is up, but notch tweeted a pic yesterday which was showing 1.9 pre release 2 http://imgur.com/qt1Ad?full, where he was experimenting with animal mobs breeding, so maybe there will be an updated pre release soon, and this is all while the game is in beta, which is itself a pre release of the final release in november, which will still see additions added even after release, soo it will just be the same but not beta basically. Clear? Good hehe

The pre release 1.9 has the addition of NPC’s as seen below, unfortunately they still don’t do anything as of yet, will be looking forward to when they do, i think it will make the game even more interesting than it already is.
