Cheap lazy roundup 23/10/2011

Well folks it’s been over a week and nobody had any grigging time to blog for you, so here’s the quick fire round of whats been and whats coming, are you ready, here we go.
batman Arkham City Collectors boxset
Batman Arkham City is out and its fantastic, no excuses go buy, unless you on PC, then you’ll have to wait until the 8th. Also included in a new copy of the game is dlc for Catwoman, who has great ass physics and is just as fun to control and beat up enemies with as the bat. Couldn’t find any mention on how to get the soundtrack download that i supposedly have acces to with the collectors edition. oh well, there was plenty of other goodies, including a few episodes on dvd of the Batman anime, the statue of course, and the book with some great concept art, and Sefton Hill (Game director, ROcksteady Studio) even quotes the iconic Ferris Bueller movie with “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” and how that could relate to game development. Either way hats off to quoting a great John Hughs Movie.

Sonic Generation Demo is out with the 3D type level added, as in not 2d side scroll, though it apparently is also in 3D as in the technology and not just the environment. There also news that the original sonic can be unlocked in the full game, though not known how just yet. North America sees the game released on the 1st of November, whereas the Grigs in the UK and Europe have to wait 3 extra days for its release on the 4th. the 3DS version with a lot of exclusive content will be later on the 25th.

Blizzcon was on this weekend announcing an annual pass for World of Warcraft that will come with free diablo 3, though there are some terms there, i think one of them is that you had to have a registered full version of WOW prior to 18th october. So this is for those who are already fans of WOW. You also need to be above the age of 18 and have a valid credit card. Not sure what the price is of the annual pass, but the current per month model is something like $15. I usually get the 60 day card from amazon for £15 and activate when i think i’m gonna have time to play. As you only get teh digital download of diablo 3, true fans of the series might want to hold of on the pass deal and get the retail version of diablo 3 that will have a lovely collectors edition with extra goodies.

Also WOW related announced at Blizzcon was the Mists of Pandaria Expansion pack that introdices a new race of Panda and a new class of monk, it looks really nice. Though expansion pack work in that you have to have the previous one. Burning Crusade comes with WOW in the chest package, then theres Wrath of the Lich King, and last year Cataclysm.

Portal 2 received ultimate game of the year at the Golden Joystick awards. Well deserved too, a fantastic humorous puzzle game.

Upcoming. Don’t forget Daytona coming to XBLA on the 26th. This is the bad boy to be excited for. Amazon seem to be out of the Wireless Steering wheels though. Unfortunately most wheels have sequencial gear shifting and not the 4 speed shift that the original arcade had, which according to Dibbs is crucial for the satisfying way to power slide the corners. If you’re in the brighton area though the you know that there is a 4 player arcade of Daytona in one of the arcades, or at least there was last year on bedgells stag. Best moment of the night.

Last but not least i also saw Driver san fran for £25 in Tesco, not bad i thought. Again work constraints and having to keep up with tech and science news has held back actual game playing lately. Damn careers.

Could the sf x tekken character teaser be Dan’s secret feminine twin brother?

Over a week ago a teaser video hit with what Dibbs Ahoy hopes means the inclusion of Juri into Street Fighter X Tekken. But instead it is most definitely a really feminine version of Dan, though Dan cannot be included in this game, this must mean he is a secret twin brother daniela from italy. Though Yoshinori Ono is still announcing characters and features across a range of capcom fighting projects he’s involved with, he hasn’t yet announced Juri which is driving Dibbs Ahoy crazy on twitter hahahaha. In fact the whole purpose of this post is for a twitter link with t.co whatever to point to an actual page, all an elaborate rouse to wind up poor Dibbs some more, hehe. That means that this entire post is fiction, please do not take it as news/truth, at least not in this dimension. Yet.

Ni No Kuni ScreenshotBooYah, Level-5 the developers of Ni No Kuni(a PS3 RPG with animation from Studio Ghibli) have had their little get together exhibit thing and have announced that NAMCO BANDAI will be publishing this bad boy in both North America and now Europe, Huzzah, that’s right Europe ^_^. Leeches! Oh Yes, It’s Sdatcher Act 3…

Things are hotting up for Jean-Jack and his haunted pal Chris Gainsbourgh as memories of a slaughter ship and its insidious cargo are revealed in Act 3 of Sdatcher, the side-project from Snatcher creator Hideo Kojima. It’s all about the little green leeches this time, worming their way into Christian’s brain and rotting it from the inside out…

Once more, we have the marvellous zajunker to thank for the translation. And, as an added treat, he’s also done us a job on the Sdatcher trailer too. Happy watching, GRiG-fans…

Enhance Your Calm, Citizens – The GRiG Fixes iOS 5…

iOS 5

So everyone loves an iOS update – new graphics, new features for free, laughing at all those BlackBerry users with broken BBM… But then there’s the download times… the endless crashes and restores… The disappearing apps… Yeah, it’s actually pretty awful. Awful to the point that, here in GRiG City, even the normally peaceful townsfolk have been grumbling. So, in the time-honoured tradition of releasing an article several years after the event, here’s our guide to surviving the iOS 5 update – full of the GRiG-onians’ problems, and the solutions that we, their overlords, have found… (ps, add your issues in the comments, and we might even update the article)

Your phone app no longer works – now, this sounds pretty fundamental but, amazingly, no other blog or forum seems to have a solution. Maybe because very few people actually make calls on their iPhone… Anyhoo, the issue we had is that the Phone “app” opens, but immediately closes to the home screen – meaning you can’t make calls or listen to voicemail or, y’know, use your phone… Well, the solution seems to relate to unaccessed voicemail and just requires some quick fingers. Get the phone app open, go to voicemail and delete all – you might need to have several goes at it, depending how long you get before it crashes. Once the voicemail is deleted, the phone should work again – and you should be able to access the deleted messages by calling your Carrier’s server.

Error 3004, 3200, etc etc etc – basically, any error that stops you from downloading the iOS update, tells you that you can’t complete Restore right now, cancels the update halfway through etc – nearly all of these errors relate to the traffic on Apple’s servers, and crop up because the updater links to the mainframe to verify parts of the install. When it’s busy, it seems that everything stops working. If you’re still getting this problem now, though, you’re unlucky as the crazy traffic from D-Day has faded – however, the best solution remains to wait until a quiet time (normally during the night, PST) and try again. If that’s no good, run through the restore process and re-run the update.

All my apps have disappeared! Or moved! – OK, hopefully you’re reading this before it’s too late, as the best solution is to backup your iPhone before getting involved in the whole sorry mess that is the iOS 5 update. Then turn the “Sync apps” option on within iTunes (I normally have this turned off, but here it’s quite useful…) When you run the update, iTunes should restore all your apps and music – if it doesn’t, re-sync the phone and this should do it for you. If those cheeky app blighters have moved around on your device – trust us, they will have and it’s BLOODY annoying – use the iTunes App screen to rearrange everything as it’s much quicker than doing it on the iPhone / iPad. (This only works if apps are synced…) Alternatively, if you want to do it on the move, use the “Group” function to shift things around – it’s quicker than moving one app at a time, and draaaaaaagging them across multiple screens.

My Guardian app doesn’t work any more – yes, this one probably only matters to me, but sadly the original Guardian app (you know, the free one – *skinflint klaxon*) doesn’t seem to have iOS 5 support. This isn’t surprising, as it was removed from the App Store long ago – suggesting there’d be no further updates – but it’s still sad. This probably applies to a whole load of older apps – so if you’re getting probs with an older program, check if it’s still on the store… And if not, cry… If it is, then it should be supported – delete the app, turn your phone off and on, and re-install the app. If that doesn’t work, contact the developers as they’ve clearly abandoned you.

I’ve got iMessage but I’m still using my text allowance! – there is no iMessage app, as the service – allowing free messaging between iOS 5 users, a la BBM – is built in. This is a good thing, as it’s much smoother to use, but it can confuse new users as there’s no option to switch between normal texts / MMS and the new service. Well, fear not – the iOS will do it for you. If the person you’re contacting has iMessage installed, when you go to write them a message your little green balloons (and the Send button) will turn blue. You’ll also see that it says “iMessage” in the text edit box, rather than “Text Message”. If it doesn’t switch over, the person you’re writing to is a flagrant scoundrel with no iOS 5 – stop writing to them until they sort their freakin’ life out.

Well, there we have it. The thoroughly comprehensive and not at all useless guide to the iOS 5 update. Coming next – how to spool a cassette tape that’s been chewed in your machine. Ashasha.

Sonic Generations Goes PC

SonicG

Well grig my groon, SEGA have decided to release Sonic Generations on the PC. This will probably seem less like important news to those of you who play your Xbox more than your laptop – but holy mother, if i ain’t looking forward to playing this sucker on the train. Sonic’s latest adventure will be available as a PC download in November.

Now, if only dumbass Microsoft would link up with Steam, we’d be having us some cross-platform purchasing right here…

Dayyyyytoooonaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Daytona title screen xbla psn
Dibbs blogged it, bedgell blogged it, and now we have a release date, i am bloggin it, along with every other worthy game blog. Daytona USA the original is coming to XBLA on the 26th October worldwide, though state side get it a day earlier, as do the american ps3, Europe ps3 has to wait until November for some reason. Not that we care, coz xbla baby yeah. so get your rolling start on because online mutliplayer and leaderboards are a coming to this most deserverd game for a modern era port. If it plays the same looks the same but just has the extra functionality i will be happy, now all they need to do is the same for the original Sega Rally and NiGHTS into Dreams and i’m set.

And further below are screenshots from the model 2 arcade emulator.

Guardian Heroes is live folks, 800 MS points, go get some

Gaurdian Heors on XBLA
It’s here grigs and grigesses, Developer Treasure’s Sega Saturn beauty “Guardian Heroes” ready for your downloading pleasure on XBOX Live Arcade, as the title says its 800 Microsoft points, which in real money is however good a deal you got for them points in the first place, i purchased 4200 of them from amazon a couple of weeks back for £33 dabloons, i make that .78p per point which mean i spent £6.28 by my reckoning.

A friend of the GRiGORiG team had this bad boy on the Sega Saturn back in the day, and though i did play it back then, man did i suck earlier this evening, i did video my gameplay but frankly its not worth it, though please find below a couple of screen shots between the beautiful pixely rendering and the weird looking hi rezzed up stuff.

My preference is the orginal pixeled version, there were many great games on the Saturn, and at least 3 that i was very good at, if only they had online leaderboards i could show off my prowess with. An proper arcade port of Sega Rally would be ideal, not the re modeled desert in the Sega Rally arcade titel released earlier this year. Just plain simple blocky from the arcade at 60fps and accurate handling/timing logic to the original. Daytona is coming out soon, which is an absolute blessing. More on that in it’s own post shortly. in the mean time, some Heroes.

No Mr Bond i expect you to DIE!

Golden Eye xbox cover art
Okay so its the wrong Golden movie for the news, and 3 actors early too, 5 if you include that other guy who did that movie between the Sean Connery stints. Oh and the not so much news but we’re blogging it anyway is……., pre order time for Golden Eye Reloaded, headed to XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 on the 4th of November, woot woot. The Americas have some pre order bonuses apparently, can’t see anything on the UK retailer sites, ah well.

If you played the wii version you no doubt know that it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t the same as the original, especially the mutliplayer that made the N64 version do great, that was disappointing, but boy was it annoying on the fuzzy wii graphics. At least now we can finally play the game without setting the wii up especially. Amazon.co.uk pre order price is £39.90 which is a little too steep for me, this would make a wonderful Christmas prezzy when its cheaper, yay.
