Sega hate us: Official

I promised I was gonna turn over a new leaf. No more being down on the state of the industry. No more peddling of the most negative aspects of video gaming that irk me so. No more raging against all and sundry for their crimes against the Grig.

It was worth a try.

While being a little late to the helm on this story and putting off a potential barrage concerning SSFIV AE due to the fact that I frankly cannot face thinking about it, I simply must address an issue that has had me making a positivity U-turn. I had even considered curbing my proverbial ‘slamming’ (in a Kerrang-stylee!) of serial offenders EA under this new outlook. But what’s the point when we have to contend with offenses of the magnitute that I am about to go into? For I put it to you sir, that there wouldn’t be a court in the land that would convict me for this outburst! In fact, if there was one felon who deserved nothing more than hard jail time, it’s former-friend Sega and their most recent atrocities against gaming!

Having played and enjoyed the fan-made remake of the once mighty Streets of Rage (as documented on this very site), Sega, not content with just abandoning great franchises and desecrating others, now see fit to have the aforementioned game pulled from the online abode that is Bombergames website. A game the quality of which, Sega in it’s current form, could not even dream of let alone bring to fruition. A game continuing a series so deeply abandoned by Sega, that numerous head-honchos didn’t even know that it existed. A game that in fact, does only exist as a remedy to Segas negligence and continued bumbling incompetence, forcing the hand of their ignored fans to prove that with a bit of care and understanding of a series, the dream of creating a brilliant sequel that has so eluded Sega in most of their other franchises, is possible.

Luckily of course, Sega’s lawyers have been on hand and have heroically stepped in to protect us all from the evils of a quality game so as not to sully Sega’s new reputation for trash, halting any damage being done to this key franchise that the company hold so dear to their hearts. What do you mean there hasn’t been a game in the series for 17 years?

Detailed in previous articles, Streets of Rage Remake is a fan made project by the brilliant and dedicated members of Bombergames that deserve to be acknowledged by anyone who has even had a passing interest in the series. For the past 8 years, these stirling fellows have been beavering away on this labour of love so that those of us lucky enough to have enjoyed this series back in it’s hey day could relive those past glories and once again walk the Streets of Rage! I tried the game myself a few years ago when there were only a couple of levels to be played, and while I could see it was going in a good direction, I had no idea the final product would be as good as it has turned out today – and it’s for these very reasons that I am so incensed now!

Where Sega has consistently failed with their franchises, fans are begining to rise up to succeed. The many Sonic fan projects are testament to the efforts people are putting in – the number of which look set to dwarf even the number of times that Sega has promised to ‘get it right this time’, and failed. And that’s a lot! The fan bases are still out there, but these days they’re forced to take matters into their own hands rather than just waiting to be disappointed again. Case in point: Sonic 4. Sega promised that they had listened and gone back to the 2D style of game everyone had longed for. Hope, against everyones better judgement, started to build. The gameplay of the 2D Megadrive/Genesis games was set in stone and new levels and graphical updates were where Sega really needed to focus their efforts. But instead, they changed the staple handling, breaking it beyond recognition and turning it into a shambling sludgefest of half-baked ideas boiling down to, once again, what they thought we should want, rather than what we actually did want. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a bad game (for the definition of that, look up Sonic ’06. *shudder*), but any quality came more from the vague shreads of what remained of the early games, rather than the truckload of poop that they added.

This alas, is Sega all over, and it was long before the destruction of Shinobi, Golden Axe and Nights that I had realised – while I wanted a Streets of Rage sequel, I didn’t want Sega to make it. Well my compadres of retro-raging, the dream came true with Remake, even if Sega are still managing to spoil it for everyone. But what else can we expect from the Sega of 2011 who can’t even put together decent compilations from a back catalogue containing good games?

The only way this situation could be made any better would be if Sega worked alongside Bombergames in doing them and their game justice, bringing it to the masses officially. Whilest I’d be mildly disappointed in having to give Sega any cut of the cash after their handling of this situation, I’d certainly pay good money for it on XBLA. Don’t tell ’em I said that though.

But you gotta look at it objectively, and fair dues to Sega for ‘protecting’ their IP and preserving the dignity of Streets of Rage for the next fifty times they rerelease it, probably on pocket calculators or those little gizmos in Argos to see if things are in stock. And now that the game is back on Segas radar, I look forward to the inevitable Streets of Rage Kart, Tennis, and of course Wii exclusive Sega Fat Fighters of Rage starring Blaze and Axel as your personal trainers. As a grateful fan, the future of the series in Segas hands is bound to be bright!

Oh by the way, I was being sarcastic.

In conclusion, hunt down Streets of Rage Remake people and see what Sega could only dream of achieving! Do it now!

World of Goo sale on IOS for the first 24 hours, plus other news/things that are around

Things briefly mentioned in this post: World of Goo, portal, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS, Make Your Own Zleda Chest. Oh and GameBoy music (not chiptune). Some of it’s old hat, but you may not have been keeping up with the jones’ the past week, i know i haven’t.

World of Goo is released on IOS today (Thursday 14th April) and is on sale at £0.59 for the first 24 hours according to a post on the developers site http://2dboy.com/2011/04/11/goophonearrives/. World of Goo is another one of them adictive indie games that is on multiple platform such as wiiware, pc, mac and now the iPhone and an HD version for the ipad, which if you think you may soon purchase one, maybe get that version instead. If you know you shall be sticking with just the ipod or iphone, then 59p is a barg. If you haven’t heard of world of goo before, then go back under your rock hehe, i joke, its a physics puzzler type game, using goo balls to build a bridges and towers to a pipe, the objective to get a load of the goo’s to the destination, its score ratings on metacritic and such like are up in the 90’s, very well respected critically.

Valve brings us an investment opertunity for long fall boots, the portal 2 hype is nearing its climax as the game is but a week away. check out the vid at the end of this post, also for those looking to buy the playstation version and link to your steam account there are some question and answers to this over at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5477-WPJM-9388. From what i can understand, and correct me if i’m wrong, the cross platform play might require a steam account, and for the game to be linked. I think. My take is that i can’t buy the ps3 version, link it to my steam account, so i can download and play on steam and then give the disc to a friend for us both to play onlinw, as my friend wouldn’t have linked his psn to steam for it to work. Time will tell what happens, i’ve pre orderd the psn version anyway just so i may actually use the ps3 maybe. but i’m pretty much gonna play it on steam, and maybe xbox to get some achievemo’s when the price goes down. I mean it’s portal, it’s freaking the bees knees.

Next up is a first impressions of Zelda Ocarina of Time over at http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=155761. In conclusion it looks really good and doesn’t dissapoint, sorry, i don’t actually have much time to write up anything, if you’re interested just go check it out at the source.

More on the Zelda front, instrucables has a make your own Zelda Treasure Chest with sound, check it out at http://www.instructables.com/id/Legend-of-Zelda-Treasure-chest-with-sound/, and check out the video at the end of this post.

Finally this popped up the other day on twitter, can’t remember who alerted me, but this is a music video of sounds created using a physical gameboy (not software on a gameboy) kinda like the old 90’s fad of using dustbins for music at a royal variety performence.

Halo. Is it Me You’re Looking For?

Nice

Well, well, Halo is 10 years young this year. That’s a decade of high quality gaming, and one that’s seen Microsoft surprise everyone by building one of the strongest fanbases in the world. So what kind of celebration would befit such an occasion? Free map-pack? A little mini-game for the fans? A load of overpriced DLC to further rinse the diehards who’ve already ploughed their funds into three games and half-arsed spinoffs over the years?

You guessed it grig-fans – let’s turn the screw!

OK, OK, we’re being a bit negative. There will be new avatar items – but we don’t have to buy ’em! And actually I’d pay a pretty penny to have a massive helmet like this guy above. (Hehehe.) And if huge headware ain’t your thing, buy a little Flood pet like the savvy brunette below. Plus, there’s not just DLC – come April 14th, there’s brand-spankers action figures from Square Enix to drool over and a comic too – and that’s something everyone can enjoy.

Yup, coming to XBL Waypoint and the web on April 23, The Mona Lisa is a “vivid motion comic” that retells a dark tale from the Halo Evolutions anthology – brought dramatically to life by leading production studios ONE and Pyramind. Sent on a highly-classified mission in the debris field of the Halo artefact, the crew of the UNSC Red Horse discover a derelict prison ship – the Mona Lisa – adrift in space . When a contingent of marines board this vessel, they come face to face with a more terrifying threat than the Covenant and are forced to battle for their very survival. Tasty enough for ya? Then give it a whirl next Saturday, and gloat merrily over not spending a penny on it. Awes.

SSFIV Arcade Edition! Are You Listening, Despair-Bots?!

D-Day is here. And for the Griggers, D means Despair. Capcom have finally unveiled their SSFIV Arcade Edition news and… well, I’ll leave the Dibbs-monger to bring his own special take on the news with an update to this post later. All I’ll say is it’s as we feared: rip-off DLC (1200msp) to be released June 6th giving you all of Yun, Yang, Oni, and Evil Ryu. A standalone SSFIV AE will come out in the summer.

For now, here’s the brand new content from Captivate – just after the jump. And much as it sickens me to say it, these vids and pics are still totally beautiful to look at. Let’s just hope the game is beautiful enough to get you through the weeks without food that it’d take to afford it… hehehe. (bitter? us?!)

(Content is coming thick and fast so refresh the page and more may well magically appear!)

Groon Lake, Nevada

‘Twas the night before Christmas (or in fact, the Captivate embargo being lifted), when all through the house, not a shread of hope remained, it was as dead as a door mouse.

Welcome jovial fellow one and all, as we find ourselves teetering on the brink of a Street Fighting event of unparalleled magnitude! By this time tomorrow, the veil of secrecy will have been lifted and we will have been officially made aware of what the grig is going on. Now this is something that could go one of two ways – at best, I anticipate being disappointed. At worst, I expect to be disappointed and wronged in a way that even Sam Beckett wouldn’t be able to put right even if he had unlimited cracks of the Leaping whip. And thus, we stand staring confirmation in the eye – are Capcom the reason ol’ Sam never made it home (or was he just feeling like a person in Rome? Hee hee, I joke!)? Quite what such a crushing revelation could be I couldn’t even hazard a guess – maybe a patch to take characters out of the current SSF4 perhaps? A graphics tinker in homage to Block Tennis where the current polygonal characters are replaced with square sprites? Or maybe even an alleged enhancement where every character becomes a shoto in a nod to the rehashed likes of Oni and Evil Ryu because apparently, there aren’t enough of them in it already? But if there’s one thing modern gaming has taught me – if there’s one generation that can crush a mans spirit, it’s this one!

So, before we find out anything for sure, we follow up the last weeks article and have a brief look at the leaks and clues that have cropped up since.

Leaked trailer: Obviously the most significant thing that has happened, pretty much confirming… well, everything really. The trailer hit the net on April 7th and had the elite Capcops (as they’ve been not-so-affectionately named) chasing posters left right and centre, pulling the video from any place they found it and slapping copyright violation notices up in their place. Of course, there was not much they could do, and lets face it – we all saw it. And boy, did it take the wind out of my sails! It was all the evidence had been pointing to – DLC featuring the 4 lame as grig AE characters that I was fearing. Arcade Edition and Arcade Edition only, seems to be what we’re getting. Ooh, but we’re getting an enhanced replay channel mode so you can follow all the top players, I hear you cry. How exciting – if I wanted to watch Daigo or Tokido, I’d watch them on YouTube! This is not where I was hoping that they were going to concentrate their efforts! Sigh…

Leaked Achievments Looking Legit: The Achievement list from last year has been given even more credibility, detailing achievements via the ability to follow players, now exposed in the coming replay channel additions. It’s looking like the list that many had criticised and now forgotten about, has been genuine all along.

PC SSFIV Listing: While Capcom have spent the last year standing firm over their refusal to release SSFIV on the PC, it looks finally like fan demand, and allegedly sense has prevailed. Ono has been hinting at the versions existence for a while, and even suggesting it will be one of the big Captivate revelations. Of course again, we will know for sure soon. However, could Capcoms DLC nightmare be stamped all over it already? Indeed, if an ESRB listing is anything to go by! The listing details many features of the game, from the ‘Alcohol Reference’ in the distillery, to more amusingly, the girl cast members, describing them as sporting outfits that are ‘form-fitting and accentuate their breasts and buttocks; the camera occasionally zooms-out from close-up views of flexed gluteus’. Get out of here with that kind of erotic talk you animal! Of course, at the top of the page, it has the standard info; age rating, platform, SSFIV as the the name… wait a second. Just wait a jimmying second! Super Street Fighter iv? SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV?!!! Yes that’s right. This, like the recent 3DS version, is apparently not the Arcade Edition. I can smell the foul stench of rip-off DLC as I stand down wind of the dump of a future Capcom are carving out.

Well, that’s the bulk of the interest. Once again, I cling to hope – Ono answering a recent Tweet after a guy told him something along the lines of ‘We already know about AE DLC (speaking about the trailer leak)’ to which he again just urged us to wait for the 12th and the proper announcement. All I can realistically hope for at this point are new characters via separate, probably individual DLC. And to bring me to the point where I actually hope they have DLC up their sleeves, that I have to ackowledge as quite an achievement. So to some extent, well played Capcom. But if you don’t come good tomorrow, there’s gonna be trouble! And no amount of Third Strike Online Edition or SFXTekken is gonna save ya!

Probably. They might be really good.

But one thing is for sure: Capcom – Sam Becketts fate is in your hands. Don’t grig it up!

Freakin’ Blue Menace Tearing Up The Show…

In case you missed it on Sega’s Facebook, here’s the new teaser for the 20th Anniversary Sonic game. And lovely it is too. Of course, it tells you absolutely nothing about the game to come – and Sega haven’t released any press to go with their little vid. But I’m loving the old Sega intro, the subtle level-design features straight out of the Megadrive, and ooh… Sonic’s styling is looking classic too. I’m going to take all this to mean that Sega are consciously going old school with their next outing – which, hopefully, translates to “good”.

Dare we dream?

The Return of Ridge Racer

As I sit here watching a bit of Malaysian Grand Prix action (which, by the way, carries some awesome commentary: “he’s stuffed himself right up Kobayashi’s exhaust”, “Hamilton is right up the inside of him, and he does not like it one bit”; hehehe), I’m thinking it’s all been a bit quiet on the driving-games front recently. There’s been a bit of F1 2011 action to keep the die-hards happy, but today’s scene is quiet on the engines and far from afog with exhaust fumes. Well, auto-lovers, if you’re running on empty, start revving your metaphorical engines for Ridge Racer Unbounded, the new version of Namco’s classic that’s power-sliding its way to PC, PS3 and 360 in 2012. (But, you know, don’t rev too much, cos of the environment and shiz.)

In development with Bugbear Entertainment, the Finnish driving-dev specialists behind the like of Sega Rally (PSP) and the Flatout series, RRU is returning after quite an extended absence – and it isn’t coming back the same.

Presumably bringing their Flatout-spin to bear, Bugbear are promising that the latest update will be all about the carnage – swapping genteel racing for fender-bending – and fast-paced city-street action, transplanting the races to the close-knit twists of Shatter Bay. Whether it’ll land on the Burnout side of the track (probably, if last month’s vid below is anything to go by), or just introduce a bit of nudgeroo like yo olde Daytona isn’t clear, but we’re promised crashes. BIG crashes. Which is always nice.

Thing is, Ridge Racer was always a solid franchise, but that’s about all you could say about it – it never quite hit the heights of originality or gameplay to which its pioneering peers aspired. There wasn’t the inch-perfect arcade excitement of Sega Rally, or the sharp-focused realism of Gran Turismo – but yet it’s always had a place in gamer’s hearts. However, its rep was really just built on Namco getting in there early – they presented gamers with a simple racer stuffed with fast cars, and a few slinky women, right at the start of the original PlayStation’s rise to dominance. The new middle-ages market that PSX picked up, without a long heritage of picking their way through the quirks of videogame racing, just lapped it up. But what can it offer now?

Well, today’s market expects a bit more bang for its buck, but the door for a new racer is wide open – and stuffing a few new tricks under the hood seems is always a savvy play. Carnage and the city both play out well on next-gen. And there’s nothing wrong with keeping it simple anyway – if we get a solid racer without all the faffing about, that might be a blessing. Here’s hoping Namco can stick it right up the genre’s exhaust pipe…
