And Speaking of RPG’s…

Ever heard of Mother 3 / Earthbound 2? Normally when some rare title comes rumbling down the Tumblr highway, I’ve at least heard of it. But this sucker – featured so neatly in this marvellous artwork – has a true following, the same kind of rare-but-known mystique that Grigchops was muntering about with Panzer Dragoon Saga (it has a Wiki. Generally a sign of fandom. And Cosplayers! It’s truly big) but I’VE NEVER HEARD OF IT!

I watched this cheeky video (embedded below – but diki, you’ll have to remind me what we do about the params in the YouTube code cos i’m grigged if i remember…) and boy it has some good music. At least in the opening few minutes anyway. For me, the music is the heart and soul of the RPG, so it seems kind of tasty.

An embedded YouTube video, yesterday. I hope.

But – beyond that, hard to say. SNES Zelda, old-school Final Fantasy – somewhere in that region it seems. I can’t really say as it’s in Japanese… so who knows. But I like the fan art above and also this poem – which you can find the rest of on Nintendo’s site where, it appears, they asked the developer for his memories of the games and he rattled this sucker off. Nice.

What is the video game, Earthbound?
Even today, it’s so hard to answer that question.

It was like a group of children taking dolls from a toy chest.
Old dishes no longer used in the kitchen.
Nuts and bolts found inside a toolbox.
Little flowers and leaves from the backyard.
And they were all laid down on the carpet with everybody singing made-up songs.
Ready to talk all day about that world they just made.
That, I think was how Earthbound was made.

Update 1) They’ve released Earthbound on Wii U. But either it’s one of the earlier games in the series (I think the really classic one was Mother 3 (or Earthbound 2 in America) that’s in this video – and was the third game surprisingly) or they’ve really changed the graphical style in the port because this doesn’t look anything like the game in that YouTube video.

Update 2) It features a character called Poo. hahahahahahahahahaha

    Update 3 – I fixed my params. I think.

Nope. It still won’t display on my iPhone so I’ve clearly ballsed the embed code up. Oops.

Now you’re hitting the big retro RPG’s. Earthbound is held in the same reverence as stuff like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger.

I don’t know much about it, but the retro dudes on Twitter talk about it A LOT! I believe there are three, but only the 2nd one was translated to English, which I think’s the one on the Wii. I think there was some kind of petition recently to release the third on the virtual console too, probably using a fan translation so the language work is already done. Could be wrong about this stuff though. But I do know its super-rare and super-expensive.

I played it on emulatior on my PSP, though I also started Chrono Trigger at the same time and that won out. I been meaning to go back though and get stuck in for a while. Did seem good from what I played.

yeah, ignore everything from before use the iframe embed code not the old style code, but delete the frameborder=”0″ as that’s invalid, also so is the center tag, use a div and class=”center”

also open and close div tags on their own line, and the initial hide div looks like it needs a blank line directly after it other wise there’s confusion with p tags.
